#27 On Appeals & Adjudication for AGMARK
Ever spotted the AGMARK logo on the packets of your food? Think pulses, cereals, essential oils, fruits, vegetables or vermicelli. It’s the mark that assures us of the quality of our food. It stands for a certification given under the General Grading and Marking Rules, 1988 which are responsible for the grading and marking of over 200 of our food products.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmer Welfare has come out with draft Amendment Rules 2024 that add to the existing rules by providing penalties for certain malpractices such as, creating fake grading marks, selling products with these fake grading marks and selling unmarked products.
The draft amendment also provides a new adjudication process for these penalties, wherein an official complaint of malpractice will be brought before an authorised officer who must decide it in a time bound manner. There is also a provision for appeal.
