The 3 Levers of Leadership
Willy A. Sussland
“What gets measured gets managed” Peter Drucker
Many books and articles underscore the importance of the leadership as a driver of performances. However, like all intangible resources, the leadership is difficult to measure and difficult to manage. So, what can be done is to grasp the 3 levers that the leadership uses in order to raise:
the attitudes - the aptitudes- the activities of the people.
Much of the literature focuses on the principles of leadership, some on how it shapes the culture of the company. But to see how the leadership drives performances, we should look at what powers its aforementioned 3 levers.
To raise the attitudes of the people, the leadership leverages the relational, the emotional, and the creative lt;mental and behavioral drivers (1)
To raise the aptitudes, the leadership leverages the rational, the result-oriented, and the creative <mental and behavioral drivers>, which create a sound base of communication, of collaboration, and of collective creativity. Leading aptitudes involves the following abilities, namely:
° the ability to see and to show the relevant systemic picture
° the ability to steer people in the right direction at the right speed
° the ability to animate the synergies of people and of processes
° the ability to simplify things so as to facilitate the moves
° the ability to stimulate cooperation, and collectively creativity.
The attitudes and the aptitudes reinforce one another, and they have become very important in the frame of the democratization of the leadership, which calls for people to proactively lead themselves, to lead others, and to being led by others.
Last but not least, the leadership leverages the design and the deployment of the method-of-management that drives the pleasure and the performances of the activities that are performed by people on the 5 <value-chains>.
To this effect, I stress the interactions of the <spirit and style of leadership> with the other factors that energize the core of the <company management system>, namely: the <strategic fundamentals>, the <method-of-management>, the <structures of the organization>, and the <system technologies>. (1) I will discuss the aforementioned 5 <S> in my next article.
The reader can apply the aforementioned 3 levers of the leadership to “The 5 Practices of Strategic Management”, which I discussed in my previous article. As always, I welcome comments on LinkedIn and on the LinkedIn groups that I have joined.

1yThese three levers are key in understanding how leadership should be measured. If we are not measuring key leadership activities, then we are left with only subjective opinions about how things are going, until it’s too late. Nice article Dr. Willy A. Sussland, and thanks for sharing your insights. 💛
