3 Money Hacks (plus a bonus tip)

3 Money Hacks (plus a bonus tip)

Let's get real – how much time are you really putting into managing your money? The average person puts in a whopping 90,000 hours working for their money, yet barely any time working on it.

What if, instead of just focusing on earning, we dedicated a fraction of that time towards improving our financial situation? Consider taking just an hour from your work-for-money routine and using it to work on your money.

Here are three nifty strategies that can help you achieve financial freedom and confidence. And guess what? I've got a bonus tip that might help you uncover some hidden cash!

Hack #1: Schedule a Financial Date Night

Why not set aside 30 minutes to an hour every month for a financial review? Make it enjoyable – grab a drink, relax, maybe turn it into a game. Whether you're solo or with a partner, this date night is all about looking at your finances over the past month and making any necessary adjustments.

Hack #2: Get Your Finances Organized

Who else has a 401k collecting dust from a job they left ages ago? As Marie Kondo would say, let's tidy up! Know exactly where all your accounts are and what they're doing for your future. Condense everything onto a single page – your student loans, life insurance, bank accounts, you name it. It's like your financial Marie Kondo balance sheet. You can use paper or go digital – your choice. This will be your go-to checklist during your financial date nights.

Hack #3: Take Charge of Your Cashflow

Divert your cashflow into four straightforward steps:

Step #1: Protect Your Assets

Stuff happens, even when we don't expect it. Be prepared for the unexpected by safeguarding your assets against life's curveballs.

Step #2: Become a Super Saver

Saving 15-20% of your income is the name of the game. Most folks start at 5%, but progress comes in baby steps. Bump up your 401k contribution a notch or make an automatic transfer to a high-yield savings account. The beauty? You won't even miss the money.

Step #3: Diversify Your Savings

Don't put all your money eggs in one basket. Balance your saving strategy by considering different accounts and options.

Step #4: Embrace Present Enjoyment

Once you've got steps 1-3 covered, it's time for guilt-free spending. Savor that latte and revel in the now.

Bonus Tip: Unearth Hidden Money

Here's a neat trick – visit www.missingmoney.com. It's like a treasure hunt for forgotten funds. A client of mine stumbled upon $16,000 they didn't know they had! I tried it myself and found $25 in just two minutes. Who knew making money could be this easy?

"Financial Date Night" sounds terrible, until you describe the details. Great idea. ;-)

Super helpful Carol Parrish, RICP®...I like the first suggestion the most: "Hack #1: Schedule a Financial Date Night" although t can feel fraught sometime looking at finances can be celebratory too perhaps...at least acknowledging dreams and possibilities. Do you have a format to suggest for this review?

This is a much-needed conversation. I appreciate the idea of making an event out of it by scheduling the monthly date. I'm going to head over to the missing money link now. Thanks for sharing Carol!

Carol Parrish, RICP® you got me right between the eyes with that statement about how little time we spend taking care of it after spending so much time earning it. This is the perfect justification when I hear that voice in my head saying "I'm too busy." It's really "I can't afford to NOT spend an hour a month managing and being a good steward of my money."
