3 Myths About Behaviour Change

3 Myths About Behaviour Change

Behaviour change is a harsh complex beast.

There is a lot of BS on social media, defining singular tactics that will get the superior results.

Unfortunately while these tactics maybe useful in the short term, they aren't the best tactics for long term change.

So let's have a look at 3 of the most common tactics and see how they fit into the bigger picture.

You Just Need to Try Harder

My favourite gringy style of motivation

Hustle harder.

Build mental toughness.

Get gritty.

Society often tells us that with enough willpower, anything is possible.

This narrative, especially common in North America, implies that successful people possess superhuman levels of determination.

For a moment, these stories are inspiring. But the “try harder” mindset can fail us in real life. Here’s why:

  • It ignores real limitations. While we can overcome many barriers, acknowledging them first is essential to tackling them effectively.

  • It overestimates “free will.” Autonomy matters, but our choices are often influenced by factors we can’t control.

  • It prioritizes effort over strategy. As Peter Drucker wisely said, “There is nothing quite so useless as doing with great efficiency something that should not be done at all.” Effort is valuable, but only when paired with the right strategy.

Bottom line: If effort alone guaranteed success, failure would imply we’re simply lazy or weak. In reality, success is a mix of effort, strategy, and skill.

Behaviour Change Is All About the Right System

Track your time, follow the latest productivity hack, or adopt a new diet system—systems seem essential, and they are, to a point.

A structured approach can guide us and enhance consistency, which is why it’s a big part of many coaching methods.

But systems aren’t a magic fix. Here’s why:

  • Systems are tools, not solutions. They can support behaviour change, but they can’t enforce it.

  • Systems sell well because they offer hope. New systems promise to solve all our problems for a low monthly fee. But when the novelty fades, we’re often back where we started.

  • Behaviour is a complex system. Changing behaviour isn’t about downloading the latest app or adding a time-management hack. It’s about understanding and addressing the underlying complexities of human motivation and habits.

Takeaway: Systems can support your goals, but they aren’t a one-size-fits-all answer to behaviour change.

The Right Motivation Will Get You There

Get inspired.

Visualize success.

Dig deep.

Motivation can feel powerful, but relying on it to sustain behaviour change is like trying to replace sleep with coffee. It works for a bit, but it’s not sustainable.

According to Dr. BJ Fogg’s research at Stanford University’s Behavior Design Lab:

  • Motivation is unpredictable. It goes up and down, and those peaks won’t last forever.

  • During high-motivation periods, tackle challenging tasks. Use these moments strategically.

  • Be prepared for the lows. When motivation wanes, have routines to fall back on. Small actions or scaled-back efforts can keep you moving forward.

In conclusion, motivation is a helpful Kickstarter, but consistency and realistic goal-setting are what help us weather the ups and downs over time.

While these three myths aren’t entirely untrue, each one, if used on its own, is practically useless.

Behaviour change is a complex mission requiring a nuanced approach:

  • Effort is important. It pushes us forward.

  • Systems are useful. They provide structure and consistency.

  • Motivation is helpful. It gives us that initial push and peaks to tackle big tasks.

  • Our environment shapes our behaviours. It influences our actions in ways we may not fully realize.

  • Clear goals give us direction. They keep us on track toward our purpose.

True behaviour change lies in weaving these elements together. Embrace this multi-faceted approach to create meaningful, lasting progress in both your personal and professional journey.
