3 Steps to Eliminate Toxic People

3 Steps to Eliminate Toxic People

If your current situation doesn’t feel right, it might be time to make a change.

When one toxic person can’t get out of their own way, they try to pull others down with them (like the Crab Bucket theory). And whether it is a co-worker, a family member, or a friend, this article can help you step back and make some changes.

Freeing up Space in Your Life

Start by asking yourself, “are the people in my life adding to my world, or pulling me down?” Maybe it it’s time for some Toxic Relief and purge them from your life. If you can’t completely purge them, then limit the time you spend with them.

Reducing the toxic people around you is another version of your self-care, like eating right or working out. It’s another way you take care of you.

“You cannot expect to live a positive life if you hang with negative people.” ~ Joel Osteen

This quote means if you spend a lot of time with people who have a consistently pessimistic or complaining attitude, it’s likely that their negativity will rub off on you. This makes it difficult to keep a positive outlook on your own life.

The company you keep will influence your overall mood and perspective.

The Hurtful Influencer:

A hurtful influencer can emerge in your life to turn your world upside down, making you feel like you are spinning out of control.

Here are some negative behaviors of the Hurtful Influencer:

  1. Controller: Try to control you and everyone around you
  2. Addictions or addictive behaviors
  3. Unkind to you, but kind to everyone around you
  4. Loud: Speaks above you, overpowering anything you say
  5. Blame you for everything; unwilling to look at themselves
  6. Drama creator. Then blame you for creating drama
  7. Twist the truth to benefit themselves

If you find yourself agreeing to one of the items listed above, it might be time to apply some ‘toxic relief’ and make a change.

Hurt People, Hurt People

Not everyone has your best interest at heart. Hurtful influencers will try to control, disrupt, spread negative rumors, and tell others what a wicked person you are, for their benefit. This is often their own insecurity coming out.

The Toxic Work Environment:

Toxic workers will affect you personally as well as the work dynamic.

Most employees believe at least 50% their day is influenced by toxic co-workers. Become aware of the toxic co-worker, so you can learn to move towards a better path.

3 Strides towards Toxic Relief

1. Increase Awareness

Wake up to the awareness of what you are feeling when in the presence of a ‘hurtful influencer’. If it doesn’t feel good, then it is time to make a change.

2. Pivot Away

Pivoting away from toxic people, means walking away from those holding you back. It will be difficult, but this change may set you free to other opportunities.

3. Move Forward

Keep moving forward without looking back. Make your decision, find other things, and other people that help you move forward.

Making Positive Changes in Life isn’t Easy, and it takes work. By following the above steps, you will rid yourself of the hurtful influencer.  People who truly care for you will understand why you needed to make the change.
