3 Things to Do Now to Turn Your Goals Into Reality
You sit down to write your goals, you’re very specific; you know what you want.
You followed the SMART technique for goal setting: to be Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. You broke down the big goals into smaller ones, put a plan to do a small thing every day, all set.
“Tomorrow I’ll start executing the plan, here we go” - You tell yourself as….
Tomorrow passes and after tomorrow and many days after that, and the plan joined the list of “my wishful thinking”.
Let’s assume you plan a goal to lose weight. You stated that you want to lose 10 Kgs in 3 months. You’re going to measure it with your scale, you’ll do it because you want to look good, fit, it’s totally achievable, and it’s not a big deal.
However, you keep repeating the same old story and never manage to put this plan into real action.
It’s frustrating I know, but don’t worry. This scenario happens to many of us, we fail to set our goals or we fail to make them real. There are a lot of reasons that could lead to this. Just to name one: MOTIVATION.
Let me tell you here about something for your personal development that you can do to manage this issue for the better.
Solve The Main Issue Using the 5-Whys Technique!
Here’s a problem-solving technique used to solve exactly this issue:
The 5-Whys technique is a technique invented by Sakichi Toyoda, the Japanese industrialist, inventor, and founder of Toyota. Many organizations use it to solve problems or develop their performance.
It’s a tool that helps you dig deep down into a problem to realize the real issue here and not just the symptoms.
Ask yourself the 5-whys of why you can’t achieve this. If we take losing weight as an example; here’s how the process could go:
Q1 - Why can’t I start my losing weight plan?
A1 - Because I can’t find the willpower to eat healthily and stop eating the food I love.
Q2 - Why can’t I stop eating?
A2 - Because eating makes me happy.
Q3 - Why does eating make me happy?
A3 - Cause I don’t do anything else or have any other reason that drives happiness.
Q4 - Why don’t I have any other thing that makes me happy?
A4 - I don’t have a favorite thing to do: traveling, reading, writing, sporting, or I just hate my job or marital status or I’m not happy with the person I’m with.
Q5 - Why don’t I like my life?
A5 - Well, I have a belief that nobody loves their jobs, marriage is not a happy thing, and it’s miserable to be single; that’s how everybody is picturing it at least. Or it could be that I lack self-confidence and have self-doubt or many insecurities that stand in the way.
And so on and so forth. You may figure out at the end that the reason why you can’t achieve your goal of losing weight is because of your insecurities or self-doubt or even your beliefs about yourself and your life.
Write It To Achieve It...
At the end of this process, you’ll be very clear about what you need to start working on and not just focus on the goal that never gets achieved!
You can write more details for each answer, and I mean WRITE, don’t just mentally answer, WRITE everything down, your hand here is the sword for that self-development battle!
- Why? Because this is how your brain works; our brain process visuals 60,000 times faster than thoughts, you have a high chance of achieving things you’ve written than things you’ve just imagined.
Write Your Goal in a Form of a Question...
Here I’d like to tell you about a Brian Tracy tip for setting goals, which recommends writing down your goals in a form of a question. So instead of writing “I want to lose 10kgs”, write “How can I lose 10 kg?”.
The answers to those questions would give more realistic steps of how you may achieve your goal. And remember, one-size doesn't fit all, so follow YOUR OWN answers ONLY.
Find Your Real Motive...
But what I would personally suggest here is: ask yourself the WHY before the HOW.
Why do I want to achieve this? Why do I want to lose weight?
Why do I want to get that job? Why do I want to marry that person?
Honesty Will Bring You Closer to Your Dreams...
If you’re honest enough with yourself, you will figure out your real motive. You also might realize that you’re not speaking your voice! You might conclude that this goal is not what you really want; it may be what society or someone in your life wants, and that’s the real reason you are not motivated in the first place.
Or maybe you’re not motivated enough to do it and that’s what you need to work on before working on the goal itself.
Find the reason behind every goal you are trying to achieve before setting a plan to achieve it.

3yEman Galal thanks for tagging me, congrats on returning to one of your passions, I really enjoyed the article. One of the keys to stick to a goal is to not make it about yourself but about something bigger. When the goal is solely about ourselves we tend to easily find ways to cheat or back-out. The extra motivation I found to lose my excess kilos was that I did it for my family and there was no easy way to excuse myself from my commitment to the goal. In the last month and a half I lost 15kg and achieved my goal.
