3 tips for training hiring managers on inclusive recruitment practices

Building a diverse and inclusive workplace starts with building equitable recruitment practices and behaviors. Hiring managers play a critical role in funneling talent into your organization as key members of the recruitment team. Hiring managers often review candidate resumes, oversee a team of interviewers, and even conduct interviews themselves.

Studies show diverse companies are 45% more likely to improve their market share, so it’s essential to train hiring managers on inclusive recruitment practices during the interview process to attract more diverse talent.

If your company is looking to create a more equitable recruitment process that attracts the best talent, here are three tips for training hiring managers on inclusive interviewing practices.

Train hiring managers to talk about difficult conversations.

Candidates are becoming more comfortable asking hiring managers about DEI strategies, COVID-19 policies, mental health awareness, the future of the company’s success, and so much more. Provide your hiring managers with resources that touch on allyship, anti-bias and inclusion, and career development. Recognize that employees are interviewing the company, too, and will choose workplaces that make them feel supported.

Have interviewers and hiring managers ask every candidate similar questions.

Standardize the recruiting process so every candidate experiences the same interview rounds, questions, and test projects. When the playing field is the same for everyone, you can assess candidates fairly. That’s equity.

Work with hiring managers to create scorecards.

Scorecards allow you to record candidate assessments based on the qualifications of the role. To do this, look at a job description and choose the top 5 skills candidates will be evaluated on. During the interview, give each person a score for each skill so you can hire for value alignment instead of “culture fit”, instead of how much you like someone’s personality.
