The 3 Types Of Content You Should Use For Better Engagement

I suggest to people three different ways of communicating in order to establish their presence and brand through their digital channels and to the marketplace. These are Short, Long and Reactive.

Short content is short snippy and may be a post with some designed artwork that captures people's attention and shares a snack of insight. This sort of content shows how you can engage others, how you maybe create a conversation or enable others to download quick information. People love a life or business hack.

The second is long content, this is something like a blog or more detailed social media post. I sometimes write my best content in the hybrid between blog post and social media post. Longer content builds you up as a thought-leader, builds your credibility and can also boost your authority as a specialist on a subject area.

You could say the first two content options are "proactive," taking some planning or preparation. The third area is "reactive" content and this includes your commentary on others social media posts or blogs etc. You could offer additional commentary on your own post if people are engaging with it. This form of content reinforces your point of view and authority but also shows some diversity in your ability to relate your subject to the specifics of others angle.

The combination of these three forms together is a simple and effective way to manage your brand and social media presence. Using these together is important because if you only post short content you may look as though you don't have much to say on a subject, or are only good at grabbing people's attention with no substance. Only long content, maybe you are a bit long-winded, unable to refine your thoughts into useful takeaways. If you only react to others content but have none of your own, you have nothing for people to find and "back up" that you have any real thought or credibility in anything.

Another main reason this is a successful approach is because people enjoy diversity and offering them different ways of interacting with you, through short, long and reactive means you can catch an audience member if they are on the hop, when they have a longer break to read something more in-depth, and when they looking for discussion or informality.

Why not weave this strategy into your social media and see if it makes a difference.

Interestingly Annelies, I read a report back in 2017 -- and developed a talk and workshop off the back of it -- which, from a study of over 5000 participants, discovered that the brands whose social content people were most drawn to displayed varying degrees of four emotional elements. Content was either funny, useful, beautiful or inspiring. Indeed the most successful brands socially used elements of all four in the content production. If you layer this lens over the lens you suggest, of being either short, long or reactive, then engagement is almost certainly going to increase exponentially.
