3 Ways to Increase Happiness at Work

3 Ways to Increase Happiness at Work

One of the main reasons I became an executive coach is I have a passion for guiding people to healthiness and happiness. Whether that's at work, at home, or a combination of the two, it's important to me that all my clients feel happy and healthy.

So that’s why today I want to answer the question: Are you and the people you lead happy at work?

I believe there are three main strategies leaders and organizations can implement to increase happiness at work. They are: 1. Being an effective leader; 2. Ensuring your employee’s careers are meaningful; and, 3. Enjoying time outside of work.

But before I dive deeper into why these strategies are so effective, let's make a cocktail to help me explain things. This week, we’re making a Whiskey Sour

Click on the video below to make this tasty cocktail with me.

The key to making a Whiskey Sour, is to find the perfect mixture between the bitterness of the Whiskey, sourness from the lemon, and sweetness from the simple syrup.

If it's too bitter, sour, or sweet … the taste just isn’t the same.  And it can be hard to enjoy the cocktail. Just like you need to balance out the three main flavors in a Whiskey Sour, you also need to balance out the three main strategies for being happy at work.

So now, let's take a deeper dive on those strategies.

Strategy Number 1: Being an effective leader means amping up your coaching skills so you improve your relationship with team members, communicate more effectively and stop doing everyone else’s work. By communicating clearly … and purposefully lifting people up, you’ll alleviate workplace stress, both yours and others … and put a smile on your team member’s faces.

Strategy Number 2: Ensuring people’s careers are meaningful means showing people what they are capable of, trusting in their abilities, and giving them the autonomy to complete projects the way they see fit.

By loosening up your control as a leader and setting inspiring development plans for people, you give your employees the space to show what they can really do and increase their responsibilities.

This also gives employees the opportunity to move towards promotions in the future.

Strategy Number 3: Enjoying time outside of work is just as important as the time you spend at work.

As a leader, it's your job to encourage people to take time away from the office to spend quality moments with family, stay active, and enjoy hobbies. It's essential to lead by example with this and show your employees that they aren’t expected to work 24/7.

By giving employees the freedom to step away from work, they will be much happier and productive when they are at the office.

Just like the enjoyment of the Whiskey Sour can be ruined if the balance between bitter, sour and sweet gets thrown off, you need to find the right combination of these 3 happiness strategies so your office experience is joyful.

Once we've blown away the myth of work-life balance and accepted the idea of work-life integration Lisa Martin, we can get down to solving the issue that you're so passionate about; helping people to be happy at home, work, or at play. This is so necessary!
