30 life lessons you only realise after living them: A journey through the decades
Now that I’m 30, I can officially say I’ve lived 10,957.5 days.
That’s over three decades of lessons learned, mistakes made, and milestones achieved. Reflecting back, I realise life is less about perfect plans and more about how we grow through its twists and turns.
From the carefree days of youth to the challenges of adulthood, these are the 30 lessons life has taught me so far, shared in the order I’ve learned them. Whether you’re younger or older, I hope these resonate with you too. (There's also a few pictures too!)
Childhood and early teens
1) Relationships, whether family or friends, provide a foundation for growth. In early life, your family and friends become the cornerstone of who you are.
2) Grandparents’ influence can leave a lasting impression. Early bonds with grandparents or older family members often shape your values and memories.
3) Childhood without social media felt more wholesome and grounded. Growing up offline fosters a focus on simpler joys and real-world interactions.
4) Loss teaches resilience and the importance of cherishing loved ones. Experiencing loss, such as a grandparent passing, often teaches the value of life and relationships.
5) Life moves faster than you expect—embrace your youth while it lasts. Early years seem endless, but reflection often reveals how fleeting they were.
Teenage years
6) Social hierarchies are a part of life—learn to navigate them wisely. School life introduces dynamics that echo into adulthood.
7) Not everyone will like you, and that’s okay—focus on authentic connections. Friendships in school teach the importance of being genuine rather than universally liked.
8) Discovering your own dislikes can be as enlightening as finding your passions. Adolescence often reveals what doesn’t align with your interests or values.
9) Youth clubs or groups (such as Air Cadet programme) teach discipline, leadership, and teamwork. Extracurricular activities introduce key life skills like teamwork and communication.
10) Time management and communication are lifelong skills. School projects and activities offer the first lessons in balancing priorities.
Late teens to early 20's
11) College years can help you find yourself, even without academic brilliance. Experimentation and exposure to new ideas help define who you are.
12) Surround yourself with friends who inspire personal growth. The friends you meet in late adolescence often encourage you to strive for more.
13) Sometimes, exposure to new environments sparks ambition. Travel or moving away for school opens your mind to broader possibilities.
14) Accomplishments like the Duke of Edinburgh awards build more than a CV. Completing challenges fosters resilience and self-belief.
15) Academic success isn’t the only path to achievement. As you meet people from diverse backgrounds, you learn there are many routes to success.

20's: building independence
16) Moments of ambiguity can be transformative if you lean into them. Early career and personal uncertainties provide opportunities for self-growth.
17) Leadership comes from understanding others and stepping forward when needed. You begin to realise leadership is more about empathy than authority.
18) Big goals are achieved one small step at a time—consistency is key. Career or fitness goals show the power of steady effort.
19) Commitments teach perseverance. Challenges teach the value of sticking to a plan, even when it’s tough.
20) Shared goals (e.g., charity challenges) strengthen bonds with others. Collaborating on meaningful projects builds strong connections.
Late 20's to early 30's
21) Parenthood shifts your perspective, making you more grounded and purposeful. Becoming a parent transforms your priorities and sense of purpose.
22) Unexpected life events can guide you toward growth and stability. Surprises, both good and bad, push you to adapt and grow.
23) Soft skills, like critical thinking and curiosity, are invaluable. Workplace and life experiences highlight the value of these intangible abilities.
24) Reflection turns past struggles into valuable insights for the future. By this stage, you begin to see how earlier challenges have shaped your resilience.
25) Personal growth accelerates when you embrace discomfort. Pushing through difficult situations helps you realise your potential.
30's: gaining perspective
26) Confidence often grows through experience rather than planning. Experience builds self-assurance, even in uncertain scenarios.
27) Completing one challenge is often just the start of the next journey. You realise life is a series of ongoing goals and milestones.
28) Time is your most valuable resource. Spend it wisely on what truly matters to you. Happiness is found in the present. Dwelling on the past or future robs you of joy in the now.
29) Every ending is a new beginning. What feels like the end of the road often leads to something greater. Don't forget that.
30) Leadership comes from understanding others and stepping forward when needed. By your thirties, you often step into roles where leadership and empathy become second nature.
10,957 days and counting, and one thing is clear: life is a continuous journey of discovery. Every experience, from childhood to now, has left an imprint on who I am and who I strive to be. These lessons aren’t just for reflection—they’re reminders to live with intention and gratitude.
