4 Reasons Your Business Needs A Website

There are many businesses that don’t have a website. And I’m talking to you – the people who think your business’s social media presence is enough. Rest assured, I am not going to tell you you shouldn’t have a social media presence for your business. You should. You should also have a website. In fact, the best practice is to link your website and social media. So let’s talk about what a website can do for your business.

1. Consistency

You want your business to be around for a long time. At least long enough for you to make an impression, make some money, and retire happy. For this, consistency is key.

The harsh reality is that Facebook and Instagram practices change. People’s interests change. One week they may want more photos and the next, they want to be more informed and read a blog post. So how do you keep up with the ever-changing needs of your audience?

And are you keeping up with your audience in the first place? In an article on AllBusiness.com, Branda Stoltz says “you’ve got to continually nurture [your social media account] and pay attention to it, otherwise it withers up and dies.” So if you have a bad week and don’t get to update your Facebook page, your followers likely to lose interest in your brand. And the same thing could happen if you don’t post what the people want to see.

What’s the best way to fix this? Have a website. Your website is selling your brand even when you’re not. You don’t have to make daily posts or updates to keep it present. (In fact, making updates that frequently is going to hurt your chances of ranking high in Google.) The best practice is to have well-written website copy that stays consistent. By making one weekly blog post on your website, you’ll keep your ranking in good standing with Google. With a website, it’s not about how many times you post, but making those posts matter

2. Professionalism

You’ve heard of Facebook, Instagram, and Etsy scams. They have great ads that are selling good products at reasonable prices and never send you the product you purchased. I’ve fallen victim to one of these myself. It’s inevitable these days to see a product online and click the link without even thinking about it. But how do you or your customers know that the product is legitimate?

Usually, scam products don’t have websites. And if they do, it’s likely that those websites aren’t well recognized by Google so they don’t rank high in the search pages. You don’t want your business to be like this. You want customers to know that you’re a legitimate business and having a good website is a great way to do that. It gives customers peace of mind that you’re a respectable business. That means they’re more likely to request services and make purchases from. With the right pages on your website, customers will be able to connect with you on a personal level, learn your business beliefs, and see all the products and services you offer.

“Having a website means businesses can be more easily found on Google, and with consumers researching online before making a purchase, not having a website can mean being invisible,” says Helen Tomes from The Telegraph.

3. Self Promotion

We’ve already touched on this a little bit, but it’s so important that it’s a benefit of its own. Your brand needs to stand out. Customers should be able to see your products and know right away what you stand for as a business. So I ask you, can your customers look at any one of your Facebook posts and know that you sell eco-friendly, made in the USA dog leashes? You’re probably shouting YES at your screen right now. But the honest answer is no.

Hear me out. You’re making a new post every day for your Facebook page. Maybe even two or three. Understandably, not all of those posts are selling your products. Some of them are going to be dogs befriending squirrels or being afraid of the cat. (Yes, I love these videos too so please keep them coming!) But do they promote your brand? No.

So now that we’re on the same page, let’s talk about what sells your brand 24/7. You know the answer: A website. By having a website for your business, you’re creating a connection with your target audience. You’re telling them who you are, what you’re selling, and why you’re selling it. You have complete control over how you’re represented and you get to share what you care most about. A website is a self-promotion tool without word count limits.

4. Free Analytics

You’re reading that right. FREE analytics. Analytics help your business survive. They tell you:

  • What’s selling and what’s not
  • How many times customers are looking at a product and not putting it in their cart
  • How many customers have items in their cart and aren’t checking out.

Don’t lose this information. Get a website.

Yes, on social media, you can see how many people have viewed, liked or loved a post, and how many people are following you. But honestly, what information does that give you from a business standpoint? It can tell you what content your followers want to see and...?

You know your business needs more than that. Most website hosting sites have free analytics. These are going to help you track your customers’ actions online. With tracking, you can see what they’re clicking on most. Maybe you’re running a special on dog toys, but no one is clicking on it. By having analytics, you can problem-solve and find out why that’s happening.

Getting tracking information for your website is a game-changer. With more information, you have the ability to learn more about your customers. Who are they? What do they want? Are you filling in a gap for them? These are such simple things that can change your business for the better. And, again, it’s mostly free.

What Are You Waiting For? Build A Website Today

Creating a website is easier and cheaper than it’s ever been before. There are sites like Squarespace, Wix, and Wordpress where you can get step by step guides to building your website. These sites usually have a domain name purchasing bundle so it’s all there in one place. There is no excuse for your business to only have a social media presence.

If you’re looking to grow, get a website.

I’ll leave you with these final words from Brenda Stotlz:

"You should have a website with a blog where you can drive traffic from social media. After all, just getting new followers is not your goal, right? Ultimately, you want more sales and brand loyalty.”
