4 Things Beauty Data is Telling Us

BY JEB GLEASON-ALLURED, content director

When Hey Discount* scoured Google, Tik Tok and Instagram to determine the top beauty trends of the past 12 months (as of April 5, 2022), the shopping platform found a mix of indicators outlining the consumer’s current mindset. I’ve outlined a few of the key takeaways.

1. Top Trending Ingredients

Skin care ingredients, particularly those with anti-aging benefits, rule the online beauty conversation. For instance, retinol has the most Tik Tok views (1.2 billion) of any ingredient, as well as more than 600,000 Instagram hashtags and 9.3 million Google searches.

Hyaluronic acid and niacinamide are about a third as popular on Tik Tok, though hyaluronic acid has more than 2x the number of Instagram hashtags as retinol, proving that platforms matter when it comes to ingredient-channel strategies for beauty marketers.

2. Sun Care is Hot

SPF is the top-trending skin-related category, boasting almost 980 million Tik Tok views, 1.6 million Instagram tags (tied with hyaluronic acid for the most of any trend on the list) and about 2.5 million Google searches. This data mirrors Q1 2022 NPD data that showed sunscreen sales increased by nearly 60%.

3. Makeup is Back

The big story for makeup in 2021-2022 has been the return of lipstick, following the gradual easing of mask mandates. It’s no surprise, then, that one of makeup’s top trends is "ombre lips," with 422 million Tik Tok views. Consumers of a certain age may know the look as a signature of the early 2000s Disney cartoon character Kim Possible.

But taking the top spot in the category is "graphic eyeliner," with 1 billion Tik Tok views, 655,000 Instagram hashtags and about 195K Google searches. Celebrities like Dua Lipa and Millie Bobby Brown have popularized the trend.

4. Skin Care Dominates the Conversation

In addition to leading the ingredient conversation online, skin care topics round out the remainder of the top trends of the last 12 months. Classics like gua sha dominate Tik Tok, with nearly 980 million views, while DIY skin care boasts 527 million. Other key topics include glass skin and lip scrubs.

*Methodology: Hey Discount used Google Keyword Planner to find the total number of worldwide Google searches for popular beauty trends in the last 12 months as of April 5, 2022. The platform also tallied the number of Instagram posts using the relevant hashtag for each trend, and TikTok to find the number of views for the relevant hashtag for each trend. The platform then totaled those figures to find the most popular beauty trends.
