4 Things That Come with Turning 50
The last time I took Jen Houghtaling’s yoga class, I found myself moderating many poses, taking longer child poses, and skipping parts of vinyasa. I intuitively knew I needed a slower pace, a softer practice, so I took it.
There was a time when I would not have listened and instead would have pushed through it.
At the moment when I found myself in child pose, instead of criticizing myself for slowing down, I felt proud that I listened.
As I laid there quietly, I realized four things that come with turning 50:
- Wisdom. We’re wise enough to know what will serve us and what won’t. Just like child’s pose, I knew I needed it and took it with judgment. We’re also wise enough to know we don’t know everything. I’ve learned that I know less than ever. I thought I knew it all when I was young. Sometimes I can’t believe how much I don’t know and am eager to learn.
- Freedom. There’s something about wisdom that frees us. We no longer feel the pressure to be something we’re not or to say yes when we want to say no, and best of all, the freedom to change our minds.
- Opportunity. When we feel free, we can see the enormous opportunity we have to reinvent ourselves. We realize we have choices. Opportunity is breathing new life into ourselves.
- Growth. When we seize the opportunity, change naturally happens. We are never too old to grow, evolve and become the next version of ourselves.
Laying in child’s pose thinking about these things, I felt happy and excited for things to come.
