5 Crucial Do's & Don'ts for Effective CTAs 💻

Think about all the times you signed up for something in your life. Downloaded an eBook? Subscribed to a streaming service? Rsvp’d for an event?

Each of those signups was likely a result of an effective call to action, paired with a clear value proposition and headlines.

There are multiple factors to consider when writing and designing CTAs, such as tone, placement, and color. Get them right, and you’re all set to drive people to high-intent pages and increase your click-through rate.

Here are five do’s and don’ts for website CTAs that’ll have users clicking their hearts away!

1. DON’T make your CTA small or hidden

Do keep them bold and visible without being disruptive to the user.

A common practice is to place CTAs above the fold on landing pages to keep them visible without users having to scroll. Other placement options with high conversion potential include:

  • In the sidebar
  • In the middle or end of a blog post
  • In a welcome pop-up message

Keep them front and center, simple as that!

2. DON’T use vague or complicated language

Do ensure CTAs are concise, actionable, and straightforward. Why? Attention spans are short.

No one should ever wonder what will happen if they click on a CTA. Keep the copy valuable and tied to an action, such as:

  • Start your free trial
  • Speak to an expert
  • Download my copy

One word can make the difference in whether users click or don’t click, so make every word count!

️3. DON’T blend your CTA with the page’s color scheme

Do use contrasting colors that make your CTA stand out from its background and other elements on the page.

Elements for a well-designed CTA button can include:

  • A defined shape or colored border
  • Added shadows or hover effects
  • Legible text

💡Design tip: ensure your CTAs pop by making them look like buttons. Familiar shapes like buttons make it easy for users to identify where to click!

4. DON’T place too many CTAs on one page

Do strategically place CTAs that align with your target audience’s interests and needs.

Overcrowding your page with CTAs can spoil a user’s experience, lead to them not clicking, and result in a conversion rate that falls flat.

Try sticking to only one primary and secondary CTA on a page. Less is more!

5. DON’T use the same CTAs all the time

Do A/B test your CTAs to understand which placements, copy, and designs work best with your audiences.

You can’t assume the same CTAs will work forever, especially when speaking to different users with specific needs.

Find the right formula and score a high conversion rate in no time. Test, test, test!
