5 Effective Ways to Get the Most Out of Your Coaching Experience

Think your are coachABLE? Well, the real truth is... some are better than most. And, being better than most means you know how to get the "most" from your coaching experience and contribute to sometimes making magic happen.

Need some magic happen for you? Here's how...

The 5 Coach-Ability Traits

Those who are the most coachable are not just “ready” and spirited to succeed. They are not simply ready to listen and put in the hard work. Those who are the most coachable are simply ready to Let Go. Let go of all they are attached to. Let go both intellectually and emotionally. Let go of their ideas, words, perhaps even their own beliefs. They are so ready that they can see and act with pure objectivity. So pure that all realities align - yours, theirs, its - and the real truth is presented to you. And, when the Real truth is presented to you, the answers and the path will be as well.

So while you are now thinking about and, in the spirit of letting go, let us share with you The 5 Breakthrough Coach-Ability Traits… so that you can be as Coach-ABLE as you can be. And remember, the more coachABLE you are, the better your mentoring experience. The better your mentoring experience, the better chances of personal success.

Tip #1 - Detach

There is a spiritual law in many faiths often referred to as The Law of Detachment. The reason why this law is so important, is that when practiced, and practiced effectively, it yields clarity, truth, objectivity and happiness. Yes, you heard that right..., all of those! So, if it is objectivity or clarity you seek, maybe even the answer to a deeply difficult or challenging problem… then, the only real way to find that truth is to detach from the circumstances preceding and surrounding it. You also will likely need to detach from what you believe your path is to finding it. And lastly, you will need to detach from your perception of the truth, your answer to the problem and even the attainment of the desired outcome.

Please note, you never detach from the desire to achieve that outcome... only the feeling and vision of the outcome itself (and as well, your perceived path to it).

Tip #2 - Bring Questions More Than Answers

Obvious right? Bring only questions with you. And keep asking them. Not only of us but of yourself. Instead of arriving feeling secure with all you know, come with the understanding of that which you don’t know is far more representative than that you do know. Often, the answers and truth you seek is found there. In that morass of unknowing. So, come committed to knowing more. Knowing more than what you presently know. Allow rather than force. Allow for new ideas, solutions and answers. Simply… allow.

Tip #3 - Lean Into The Discomfort

What do we mean and why is this important? Ever face a problem? Of course you have. When facing those problems don’t you habitually face and solve them in certain ways? Ways that have always worked. Worked for you? Proven? Trusted? Well, what if you paused before you habitually faced these common challenges and searched for other, perhaps even more uncomfortable ways to solve them. Ways that might actually be better but would absolutely cause you more discomfort. More discomfort because… you have never solved them in that particular way before. Because it is unproven… at least to you. Because the very act of solving it in that uncomfortable way is just not you… or the you that you believe you are instead of who you really are.

The real truth is that your truth is not the only truth and not even necessarily the real or best truth. (Read that again if you didn't get it - it's worth it!) So, be open to other truths. See with greater vision and depth. Expect to lean into some uncomfortable realities presented to you during your mentoring experience. Allow for something new to come into your life and lean into the discomfort to have that happen!

Tip #4 - Be Committed to Finding Right Rather Than Being It

Shifting your commitment away from simply having to be right or feeling that you are required to be (never mind all the reasons why this is the case) you will quickly realize that so many possibilities (some good and some not as good) will be presented to you.

Just this realization that you can shift this focus and make a commitment to it is a big step. Know, be aware that you don’t always have to be right… that right will always present itself to you. What matters most is that you just simply find it!

So, bring this awareness with you to your mentoring experience and the entirety of the process. Right will be presented to you… it matters NOT from where it emanates, only that you simply find it.

Tip #5 - Allow For Pause, Space and Silence

There is incredible power in pause… simply pausing before reacting. Pausing before deciding. Pausing before speaking. Allowing for silence and space between words, between thoughts… even, between emotions.  Temperance often wins out over enthusiasm and emotional vicissitudes.  An empowered response therefore is one that emanates from the best place within you. And, that is most commonly achieved when you pause, allow for the time and space for you to shift back to the best place within you.

As mentors/coaches, we know how enthusiastic you are. We know that you know more about your business, your industry, your career, your life and of course your challenges better than we do. However, what an experienced and talented mentor brings is the ability to help you see what you presently cannot. A mentor brings experience and wisdom… that which you presently do not yet have in the right places or with the same robustness.  So, by simply pausing (all the way through your mentoring experience), you likely will be able to tap into that experience and wisdom with more robustness on your own.

Universal Truth: What you give is what you get. So, if you give from the best, most empowered place within you, then we as coaches can reciprocate from the best, wisest place within us. The best bringing their best… every time, every session, every word, every moment. Now that is where and when the real magic in mentoring happens! And, if there is magic, not only will you and your mentor be happy but, you will now know that you are truly coachABLE.

Always insightful Andrew Kolikoff. I have had the privilege of working with some of the greatest athletes to play their sports, and some incredible leaders in great organizations. For sports, you might be amazed to hear, but, in my experience, the greatest players are the ones most open to coaching, advice, and learning something new. They have a curiosity about what they don't know, or even to learn someone else's perspective on things. These athletes excel from their openness to grow, and by being honest about their strengths and weaknesses. You message is spot on, and we should all seek to apply this to ourselves, and our teams.
