5 Great Lessons a Small Business Can Learn from the Masters
So, the just concluded Masters Tournament was the 85th edition and the first of the men's four major golf championships held in 2021. It was held from April 8–11, 2021 at the Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia and the surprising turn of events made it one of the most historic days in sports:
Hideki Matsuyama put together two brilliant closing rounds at the Augusta National Golf Club, Georgia to win the 2021 Masters.
The highlight?
Hideki Matsuyama became the first Japanese male golfer to win a major championship, and the first Asian-born golfer to win the Masters.
OK so, beyond the entertainment and adrenaline rush that the Masters Tournament brings to armchair golfers every year, what can a small business owner (like yourself) learn from the Masters?
Well, here are quick 5 lessons for small business owners:
#1: Failure is not final until you give up
Right now, the Augusta National Golf Club is no doubt one of the most prestigious golf clubs in the world.
But...did you know that early in the club’s existence [during the Great Depression] this same golf club struggled to get off the ground as it failed to attract new members?
In fact, club co-founder Clifford Roberts struggled with the club’s mounting debts and couldn’t keep up with interest payments. They went as far as providing free advertisment in early Masters programs to the vendors they owed in lieu of payment. Imagine that!
Takeaway? Because Bobby Jones and Clifford Roberts stuck with the club’s vision despite seemingly overwhelming circumstances, that ‘failing’ vision has over the years developed into one of the most-watched tournaments and recognizable brand across the globe.
#2: Preparation precedes top performance
How long does Tiger Woods practice golf?
Well, according to Tiger Woods' former trainer, Haney; Tiger used to have a laborious training schedule that included 13-hour, marathon training days when he was younger.
Why? Haney said such laborious training gave Woods a mental edge as he knew nobody could outwork him. So, he’d often do a morning workout, work on his swing, play 18 holes, work on his game some more, then do a second workout in the evening -- back to back like that.
How about you...I mean, how much prep time do you invest in your small business? What’s your strategy for capturing and nurturing leads as well as closing the sale? Are you getting the kind of results you want? When you don’t, do you change your approach, tweak here and there? How’s that working out?
#3: The best tools can significantly improve your game
Bad tools can make you lose...
But the right tools can put the odds in your favor and make you win like a pro.
Wondering what’s inside the bag of a 15-time Major winner like -- Tiger Woods. Let’s have a look at a few:
- Three-wood is a TaylorMade SIM
- Five-wood is a TaylorMade M3
- 2-iron is a brand new P790 UDI option from TaylorMade
Notice how all 3 tools above are from TaylorMade?
As a small business owner, you need to seek out the best tools of the trade from the best brands out there as well...if you’re looking to outperform the competition.
#4: Visibility is everything
Ever wondered why brands like Nike spend a fortune just to kit superstars like Tiger? They want you to see and fall in love with Nike as you do Woods.
What’s the one place your customers go to Every Single Day?
Where do they shop, what do they buy, what problems do they want solved?
Well, you need to find them, find out what they want, and then position (with your solution) where they visit the most -- social media.
#5: Continuous improvement is the name of the game
What worked yesterday typically needs some tweaking or total overhaul today, right? Absolutely!
By winning this year’s famous golf tournament, Matsuyama became the first Japanese man to win a golf major, ending an almost 4 year winless drought.
In 2019, Tiger Woods won his 15th major championship after an 11 year winless drought.
Notice anything in common between the 2 champions? I bet you do!
And what do you think changed the game from drought to world acclaim?
Continuous improvement.
Pro Tip: If you want your small business to stay relevant -- in and post-pandemic -- you must invest in the right tools, show up everyday so prospects can keep soaking in your brand/offer, and never give up until you succeed...just like Hideki Matsuyama.

3yAll great points including number three which I paused on. Without a doubt the best tools can provide an edge – that extra something or maybe everything. Sometimes improvisation due to constraints like cost, time or need for advanced skill dictates what tools are available (in the bag). All four lessons enacted even a hockey stick reimagined by the right person can secure wins. ;)
