5 Life Lessons: The Power of Purpose, Kindness, Resilience, and Giving Back

In my recent interview with Mark Brodinsky Mark Brodinsky, Emmy-Award Winning producer & writer, author, blogger, insurance producer and founder of the You Matter Movement, I was reminded of a profound truth: we all have the power to make a significant difference in the lives of others, no matter how small the action may seem. Mark’s journey, from an Emmy Award-winning TV producer to a life insurance agent, podcaster, author, and founder of the "You Matter" movement, is a testament to the importance of living with purpose, taking action, and building resilience through life's challenges. In my role as a trainer, I am passionate about helping people find their voice and live up to their full potential. Mark's story resonated with me because it echoed many of the principles we teach in Dale Carnegie—principles about human connection, value, and the importance of seeing the good in ourselves and others. His simple yet powerful movement, centered around reminding people that "You Matter," aligns perfectly with what we strive for in our trainings: building confidence, creating meaningful connections, and making an impact.

Here are five key lessons from our conversation that I believe can inspire anyone looking to live a more purposeful and fulfilling life and a more engaged workforce:

1. Value is the Core of Everything

Mark’s word for 2024 is “value,” and it’s something we should all reflect on. Whether in business or in our personal lives, people are drawn to those who provide value. It’s not just about what you do but how you make others feel. In his own words, “People don’t pay for you; they pay for the value you bring to their lives.” As professionals and leaders, it’s crucial to focus on how we can consistently add value to others. When we give value, we naturally create a positive ripple effect that benefits everyone.

2. Measure What Matters

One of the practices that has propelled Mark’s success is being part of a mastermind group that meets regularly to track goals. They follow a program called Living Your Best Year Ever by Darren Hardy, where they set three banner goals for the year and review progress every two weeks. This accountability keeps them focused and driven. For any professional, measuring your progress is essential. Whether it's tracking your sales numbers, team development, or personal goals, what gets measured gets managed. Regular reflection and accountability can transform how you approach your work and life. I leverage several coaches, mentors and accountability groups in my personal and professional life and being part of a mastermind has been an incredible learning experience.

3. Don’t Do Life Alone

One of the most powerful lessons from Mark’s journey is the importance of community. He spoke about the strength he found in his mastermind group, especially during tough times, such as overcoming a speech impediment or navigating a painful divorce. His message is clear: don’t go through life alone. We all need a support system, whether it's friends, family, or colleagues. Building strong relationships is a need to have, because human connection is the foundation of success. Reach out, ask for help, and surround yourself with people who will lift you up. In Abraham Maslow's research from 1943, his hierarchy of needs shares that we all need belongingness, the human emotional need for interpersonal relationships, connectedness, community and being a part of groups. This can be family, friends, groups at work and outside of work. Where can you encourage your employees to join ERG groups or internal affinity groups?

4. Take Action, Even When It’s Scary

Mark shared the pivotal moment when he left his secure job in television to become self-employed in the insurance industry. He took that leap because he wanted to be present for his family and control his own destiny. The fear of the unknown can paralyze us, but action is the antidote. Whether it’s starting a new career, speaking up in a meeting, or pursuing a personal passion, taking action—especially when it’s uncomfortable—is the key to growth. We need to take massive action in all things we do. Don't overthink, overanalyze, just do. If we are looking for that promotion or opportunity to lead a project, seek out support and be proactive!

5. You Matter

At the heart of Mark’s work is his “You Matter” movement, which is so inspiring! His mission is to positively impact a billion people by reminding them of their worth through two simple words: You Matter. Mark now hands these cards out everywhere he goes, and the reactions he receives are profound. People light up, tear up, and feel seen. This reminds me of one of Dale Carnegie’s most fundamental principles: give honest and sincere appreciation. In a world where people often feel overlooked, a small gesture of appreciation can have an immense impact. I keep small notecards with sayings in my car and sometimes will write a handwritten note to the gas attendant who is working hard, the waiter or waitress who is either having a bad day or gave exceptional service. I also will write these short, specific notes of qualities I see in others and give these notes to some participants. You never know the impact you will make, and it is a simple, kind and selfless gesture. Think about a short note or even just words of encouragement you can provide to a peer or person you work with. Grab an index card, write a few words of encouragement and hand it off. This can help build morale and engagement.

Mark’s journey is a powerful reminder that we all have something unique to offer the world. Whether it’s through our work, our words, or simply how we treat others, we each have the power to inspire and uplift those around us. In my role and through the incredible people I meet in this life, I am continually inspired by stories like Mark’s. They remind me that the work we do isn’t just about teaching skills; it’s about changing lives, one conversation, one interaction, and one small act of appreciation at a time.

As you start your week, I encourage you to reflect on how you can add value, take action, and remind yourself and those around you that you matter. We'd love to hear the small gestures that others provided to you or what you do for others to make sure they know that they matter? Share your thoughts in the comments!
