5 Minutes With.... Michael Quigley
Michael Quigley is the founder of Kataholos, he is an author, podcast host, blogger and a music and fitness fanatic.
I first became aware of Michael on social media a couple of years ago. As an avid learner, I follow people who provide their nuggets of wisdom and Michael does this in abundance. He does it with such passion and clarity and I was in awe of this man who gave so freely. What I really noticed was that it came from a place of love and joy, Michael really wants you to succeed.
I attended Michael’s public speaking masterclass last year and we had such a fun-filled day at his studio, he makes you feel so welcome and supported.
Michael is someone who constantly supports and promotes others and I wanted to know what shaped Michael into who is he and what he does.
Michael, you are the founder of Kataholos. What does that mean and what is your mission?
Kataholos comes from two words, holos being holistic and kata being form. It means according to the whole, keeping the bigger picture in mind, always thinking holistically and how things all work together.
My mission statement is ‘Growing people to know, to do and be their very best selves through genuine integrity, wholesome relationships and loving kindness’.
You wrote 'Kataholos: Guidelines for a Wholistic Happy Life'. What is the book about?
The book is about our health and wellbeing philosophy including five areas; body, mind, spirit, emotions and digital health. This goes back to the philosophy of the company and how holistically you look after all things together as a whole and not individually.
The value of service and the meaning and knowing that you are doing good work for people
I believe that you was a volunteer carer for the Lourdes pilgrimage, that must have been quite an experience. What did you learn from it?
I learnt the power of faith and the power of being good to people. They say that the real miracle of Lourdes is that it restores older people’s faith in the young.
It was the fact that it doesn’t matter if someone is in a wheelchair, if a person has a disease or what age they are, we are all one big family together and that really hit home.
The value of service and the meaning and knowing that you are doing good work for people. I remember scrubbing the toilets and being happy about it as I was helping people. It is bringing together people of all sorts of races, nationality and ages and it was all one big family and that really hit home for me.
Your career started as a primary school teacher. What did you enjoy about that role and how did it lead onto founding your own organisation?
The kids were always the easy bit, they were fantastic, they were amazing, I always had their back and I loved them 100%.
I had a really bad time, I had a family member who died and we had to give them palliative care and at the same time I had time off work with stress, I was depressed and I had a really difficult time. I bounced back from that stronger than ever and I realised that I needed to write, I needed to grow, to change. I left teaching and founded a business as I knew I had a mission and I had to take it out to people and it grew from there.
I started doing training courses, I wrote the book, I started taking on clients and I formed a limited company. I joined a networking organisation and the Chamber of Commerce and it went from strength to strength. I started working regionally and nationally in London and most recently internationally and so I took the love of people from teaching and brought that into the business world.
You wrote an article ‘Are you wanting to lead your business from a place of love, rather than of fear?’ Why is love important in the world of business?
That is a great question. People don’t want to do business with people they just like. They don’t want to work with people they just like. They don’t want to dedicate themselves to a cause that they like. They need to love it, they need to be in love with it. They need to feel love and to feel a sense of belonging and meaning.
I say to people, how your parents treated you or how your partner treats you or your dog, where that love is, you bring that love, you bring that passion, it is infectious and it will raise the game of everybody. Also, love is so needed in the world of business as we need to be kind, generous, friendly and loving towards each other. There is no need to treat people as enemies at all. Love is a driving force of my business.
Businesses need to keep taking in new things all the time and I feel really strongly about that.
You also wrote an article about the ‘Second law of thermodynamics’. What does that entail?
If you have a closed system with no new information coming through over time it will break down. If you think about your role Paula, you are constantly learning and taking on new information. That is what organisations need to do to keep going because if you keep expecting to do the same things it will break down and entropy will take over and the energy is going to drop. Businesses need to keep taking in new things all the time and I feel really strongly about that.
We met at your public speaking masterclass, why is that an important skill to have in business?
Most people won’t do it, they won’t put themselves out there and say “Look at me, I can speak about this, I know about that”. Firstly, by learning this skill you come ahead of your competition and secondly, it helps to develop you. You realise how much you know and you can pass it on to people.
If you say something to someone and they don’t get it, it is your fault, so it gives you the skills to be able to pass on your knowledge and information and to make connections with people.
I have noticed that the quality of your videos from when I first started following you have grown from quite basic to now extremely professional. How have you achieved that?
I started using a film studio which set a standard and I said to myself that I wasn’t going backwards. I had a connection who added captions and my logo and I wanted to keep them getting better professionally. I’ve got more ideas how to improve them, however, my main focus is that what I’m saying is more important than how flashy it looks.
I know that you are passionate about fitness and I have seen that music is really important to you. Why is that?
It’s a different aspect of being human. If you put on music, someone can relate to it straight away. The fitness is so important, you can push yourself and enjoy being in your body and get out of your mind and it all works together.
It is not enough to just work and rest. You have to have different aspects, you have to have play, to have time with family and friends, to focus on your health and to enjoy music, it is all different parts of us.
You inspire so many people, where do you get your inspiration from, who inspires you and who do you follow?
Thank you for saying I inspire people. Nature is a massive one for me and people and their ability to keep going despite hard times.
I follow all sorts of different people although I prefer to say who I am interested in. I have massive respect for John O’Donohue who is an Irish poet, priest and mystic. I think he is brilliant. Also, Louise Hay, an American motivational author, is an absolutely fantastic woman who is all about loving ourselves.
I can take inspiration from many places. Also, how far I’ve come and where I’ve come from. I’ve experienced the death of loved ones and I’ve had difficulties over the last few years which inspires me to keep going and to know that it is all for a reason, even if I’m just helping a few people.
What is next for Michael?
My online courses are being made available internationally and are starting to be accessed all over the world from here in the UK to Australia. My goal was to always be online and to get as much value to people as I could. I will continue to do that with videos and blogs, subscriber emails and online training opportunities. The sky is the limit and it is very, very exciting.
