5 Questions to Maximize Your Holidays (& Your Energy)
We are deep in the middle of the holiday season. How you doin’? What gear are you in thus far?
The holidays can be a time of magic, but for active introverts, they can also feel overwhelming. Pausing and a bit of thoughtful reflection help us align our actions with our values and priorities so we can experience the season with joy and intention.
Sometimes, just to catch a breath.
If you weren’t able to join the Savor The Season Email Advent Calendar experience (maybe next year?), help is still available to help you slow down and hold on to that holiday magic again.
Below are five questions to help you find joy, create memories, and (I emphasize AND) protect your energy this holiday season. For each question, I’ve paired why it matters, a practical tip, and a sample of how to make it work for you.
What truly brings me joy during the holidays, and how can I intentionally make space for those experiences?
Why it Matters: Knowing what brings you joy allows you to focus on what truly matters, cutting through the chatter and busyness. Finding joy in moments anchor us in the present and create lasting memories that we cherish long after the holidays.
Do This: Identify one activity or tradition that makes you happiest and prioritize it. Block time for it on your calendar as a non-negotiable.
Sample: "I love holiday cookies and treats. Since I work from home, I am making a quick batch of sugar cookes (with red and green sugar) during my lunch tomorrow."
How can I protect and recharge my energy while participating in festive events or gatherings?
Why it Matters: While peopling can be enjoyable, it can wipeout introverts' energy. Intentionally creating space to recharge ensures you can show up fully present and engaged when it matters most.
Do This: Plan downtime after busy events. Schedule 30 minutes of a calming activity to help you recharge and reset. Something just for you (e.g., Cup of tea and read 10 pages of your current book). Everything else can wait.
Sample: "I'll attend the office holiday party but leave by 9 PM so I can unwind with a favorite book and tea before bed."
What traditions or activities do I want to revisit or create this year to make lasting memories?
Why it Matters: Traditions and activities are the essence of our holiday memories. Being intentional about what you choose ensures they align with (and add to) those memories and bring joy.
Do This: Choose one meaningful activity to either revive or start fresh. Share it with loved ones to build excitement and create accountability. “Fam, we’re doing something different this weekend!”
Sample: "This year, I want to start a new tradition of writing gratitude notes for the past year. I'll invite my family to join me on New Year's Eve."
Who do I want to connect with most this season, and how can I do so in ways that feel authentic and energizing?
Why it Matters: Deep, meaningful connections enrich our lives and make the holidays more special. Thoughtful planning ensures these connections align with your energy and preferences. Even we introverts have those who we connect with that bring us energy and joy. Keep them close.
Do This: Reach out to one or two key people you value most. Suggest a relaxed, enjoyable way to connect, such as a one-on-one coffee date or a quiet walk.
Sample: "The kids are so busy nowadays, so I am planning a lunch or coffee with each alone. Just one-on-one time to enjoy each other."
How can I simplify my holiday commitments to align with my values and enjoy the season without overwhelm?
Why it Matters: The holidays can quickly become cluttered with “necessary” obligations and “shoulds.”. Simplifying commitments frees up time and energy for what truly matters, leaving room for joy and intention.
Do This: Review your calendar and tasklist and identify one you can decline or delegate. Use the freed-up time for a more meaningful activity or much-needed rest.
Sample: "I’ll skip hosting the associations dinner this year and instead suggest everyone bring their favorite dish. This will give me more time to enjoy decorating and probably enjoy a really interesting dinner!"
Final Thought
Life can always feel busy. The holidays only add that much more mentally, physically, and emotionally. The holiday season is your chance to create experiences that align with yourself and what you value most.
