5 Team-Building Exercises Your Team Will Actually Enjoy
Navigating the transition from esteemed lecturer to department chair or any new leadership role in higher education can be daunting. However, one thing is certain: your unique perspective and experiences bring immense value to your team and institution.
One way to foster a strong and cohesive team is through purposeful team-building exercises. Let’s face it– the traditional “office pizza party” can only do so much. To truly engage and empower your team, you need activities that are not only enjoyable but also meaningful and effective. This blog post discusses what team building is and why it is important. What is Team Building?
Team building is the intentional process of bringing together individuals within a group to foster stronger relationships, enhance collaboration, and improve overall team effectiveness. Team building goes beyond simple social interactions or superficial bonding; it aims to create a cohesive and supportive environment where each member feels valued, understood, and motivated to contribute their best towards shared goals. Why is Team Building Important?
Team-building opportunities not only engage colleagues but also foster friendships and community within the working environment. They improve communication and can be a great way to introduce new hires to the team or yourself as a new leader, helping you get to know your new team and your team get to know you!
When done effectively, team building increases trust, encourages creativity, and boosts overall morale. Team-building events can show faculty and staff that leaders genuinely take an interest in thoughts, feelings, strengths, and experiences.
Team Building Activities
Here are five team-building exercises that will help you build a supportive environment.
Story Circles
Encourage your team members to share personal stories related to their professional journey, challenges they’ve overcome, or moments of triumph. This exercise fosters empathy, builds trust, and strengthens connections among team members. This can be a great way for new and seasoned team members to get to know each other or learn something new about each other they may not have known before.
Strengths Spotting
Create a safe space for team members to recognize and appreciate each other’s strengths. Ask each person to identify a colleague's unique strengths and share how those strengths have positively impacted the team. This exercise boosts morale and encourages a culture of appreciation and support.
Collaborative Vision Board
This one is a little more hands-on. Gather magazines, art supplies, and other materials, and invite your team to create a vision board together. Encourage them to visualize their collective goals, aspirations, and values as a team. This activity promotes creativity, alignment, and a shared sense of purpose.

Problem-Solving Challenges
Present your team with real-world challenges or scenarios relevant to your department or institution. Divide them into small groups and challenge them to brainstorm innovative solutions collaboratively. This exercise enhances critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and teamwork.
Outdoor Adventure
If possible, consider the opportunity to take your team outdoors for a day of team-building activities such as ropes courses, scavenger hunts, or hiking (or a simple walk around campus!) Physical activities like these promote teamwork, communication, and trust while providing a refreshing change of pace from the indoor classroom/office environment.
Remember, team-building exercises don’t have to take an enormous chunk of time and should be selected based on your team’s dynamic personalities and preferences. Selecting an activity that clashes with your team’s comfort levels can be more of a detriment than an effective bonding exercise. You may be met with resistance or flat-out rejection of participation. This is another reason why effective team assimilation is so important—you need to know how to connect with your team and understand each member as the unique individual they are.
