5 Things You Should Know Before You Make Your Next Hire!

Hiring your first employee is exciting! That excitement however, can quickly turn into overwhelm once you are in the pursuit of finding ‘the one’.

Where do you begin? How do you progress from being overwhelmed to being prepared?

Fun Fact: Did you know that the first 5 employees will make or break your start-up.

Why? Because for any company, talent is the most important piece to the long-sought-after puzzle to long term success.

So, here are 5 things we would like to share to help you start hiring your winning team:

1. Start with creating a Job Description for the role

You can simply start with listing down the tasks that you expect the employee to carry out. Next, outline the qualifications and minimum experience required for the role. It is worth noting that some roles may need zero qualification or experience; a number of entry level roles fall into this category. They may, however, require certain skills and you can document this job description.

2.Outline the Recruitment Process

Finding the right talent is both, an art and a science. The ‘science’ is the recruitment process which can be standardized whereas the person-fit is more of an art. The clearer you are on the requirements, the easier and quicker it is to select the right candidate.

3. Ensure the Applicant is Role and Culture Fit

On paper, it may seem like there are plenty of attractive resumes and candidates for your role. In some cases, a candidate may seem perfect because he/she is ‘just like me’. But that doesn’t mean the person is necessarily a ‘culture’ fit. Look for behaviors that personify your company and its values. For instance, if one of your core values is ‘integrity’, ask the candidate to share the real-life examples from their past experience to demonstrate that value.

4. Hire for Entrepreneurial Culture

In a start-up or small business, every day is a new adventure. Some candidates will see this as liberating while others will feel uncomfortable. Therefore, it becomes crucial to find a suitable fit for your business. The freewheeling environment of the typical start-up can be uncomfortable for someone used to working in a structured setting.

5. Be Honest and Transparent

To ensure a good fit, you must explain the reality on the ground. Give candidates a tour so they can see the barebones environment. Provide examples of the kind of roll-up-your-sleeves tasks that they may be assigned. At the same time, focus on the positives: the potential to create something from a clean slate and the opportunity to take on broader responsibilities in a dynamic environment.
