5 Ways to Improve Your Life Without Dieting or Exercise

I want to thank you for spending time with me today, as I celebrate this 800th edition of Monday Morning Thoughts! I’m grateful for the opportunity to share ideas and perspectives that have helped many of you. I continue to be awed by your replies, stories of change and success, as well as the friendships I’ve gained since starting back in May 2010.

As you prepare to close out the year and start putting together goals and objectives for the New Year, I want to share 5 ways you can improve your life without dieting and exercise. Granted, both are important, however, I know you can read about both topics all day, every day!

I’m a firm believer, if you change the way you think about things, the things you think about change. The 5 ways to improve your life can be done without getting out of your chair! You simply need to think about them and see if you can implement one or all these ideas into your daily thoughts!

The first way to improve your life is to feel good about yourself! The quickest and easiest way to feel good about yourself is to help others feel good about themselves. Think about the people in your life that you can reach out to and express your gratitude for the things they have done to help you. There are times you have shared with others that have created life-long memories. Just thinking about them makes you smile. Take a few moments to let those people know, you still smile when you think about those times! Let others know they matter to you.

The second way to improve your life is to reduce your stress! Most people think their stress is caused by external circumstances. This is a myth. If stress was caused by external circumstances, then everyone would have stress from similar circumstances. For example, if two people lose their jobs, one may feel a lot of stress, while another remains calm. What really causes stress is their internal ideas. It’s what they think will happen because of their unemployment. One focuses on the loss of income. The other focuses on finding a job closer to home, with less stress, higher pay, a supervisor that appreciates them, etc. If you change the way you think about your circumstances, your circumstances will change for you. Instead of thinking about the problems, you will begin to see the opportunities.

The third way to improve your life is to change your expectations of others! If you are miserable or find yourself surrounded by people that are miserable, if you evaluate the cause of the misery, more often than not, it’s because you (or they) expect others to be a certain way. It’s only when you (or they) quit having expectations of others that misery will end. In fact, the happiest people expect nothing from anyone. It’s the acceptance of others that minimizes frustrations and misery.

The fourth way to improve your life is to become unstoppable! One way to guarantee you become unstoppable is to find a way to be okay with being disliked. It’s impossible to please everyone. Trying to be a people pleaser will prevent you from ever achieving all you can do. If you look at every presidential election, it doesn’t matter which party wins, they know that almost half of the voters voted against them. You must decide what your values are. What you believe in and want to achieve. When you are strong in your convictions, you will not be swayed by the opinions of others. You will be able to handle the storm of opposition. When you can stay committed while naysayers try to get you to change your mind, nothing will stop you.

The fifth way to improve your life is to be more present! Most people spend too much time worrying about the way things turned out in the past. Things they should have done or shouldn’t have done. When they are not worrying about the past, they’re worried about what they need to do in the future, or they worry they don’t know what to do in the future. It’s important to remember, there are no problems in the present moment. Sometimes, you simply need to slow down and appreciate the moment you are in. You can focus on the sun shining on your face. You can spend a moment being grateful for where you are right now. You can appreciate the amenities around you such as heat or air conditioning, a roof over your head, lighting, etc. Sometimes, it only takes a moment of being present to realize all the conveniences, resources, comfort, and advantages at your disposal.

When it comes to improving your life, it’s never too late to start and always too late to wait. Get started today. There’s no need to wait for a new year to get started on improving your life. Don’t let a calendar influence your decision to act.

“Never let the quest for more distract you from the beauty of enough.”

Remember, there is greatness within you. You have to choose greatness. It won’t develop on its own. I believe in you!
