The 5 W's of Project Management

The 5 W's of Project Management

Project Management has many styles including Prince2, PMBOK, Agile, Waterfall etc. In essence Project Management is not one style, but a collaboration of styles to provide specific environments for specific sectors. With this stated, some projects will use a collaboration fo styles, not withstanding common sense.

There are however, 5 W's that are at the foundation of any project. These are:

  1. What
  2. Where
  3. When
  4. Who
  5. Way (How)

What

What is the project, what do we want to manage and deliver? In a plan this would be the PID or Scope for delivery.

Where

Where is the project taking place, as this has a direct impact on resource management as well as geopolitical and environmental impacts to the project.

When

When does the project start and for how long will the project last until completion. In a plan this would be the dates and durations.

Who

Who is delivering the project, all roles and workstreams, the resources required to deliver a successful project. In a pllan this would be the resource list.

Way

How is the project being delivered from planning to task delivery including supply chain for physical attributes to sypply chain for human resources. In a plan this would the be task description, the resource allocation and the duration of the task.
