#59 - Harnessing the Potential of Visualisation: From Aspiration to Action in Data Analytics

Words of Gratitude
Editors Note by Lisema Matsietsi

We have been exposed to a lot of visualisation practices that promised us success through positive thinking. Although some of us are not in agreement with positive thinking, there might still be meat for us before we throw away the bones. This led us to question the role of visualisation practices in data analysis. Although we don't create vision boards (As written in The Secrets), we believe that it is valuable to collectively think (mentally visualise) about what we want to achieve before we start analysing the data and visualising in using business intelligence (BI). This is crucial because mental visualisation enables analysts to translate their aspirations into actions, tackle complexity with clarity, and produce meaningful outcomes. Whether you are a beginner starting your analytical journey or an experienced professional aiming to enhance your skills, using mental visualisation as a strategic tool can help you unlock the full potential of your data and turn your dreams into reality. I know you will enjoy this edition. Let us meet again this coming Monday for another exciting newsletter.

Jump Now and Pursue What You Want Before Its Too Late

The thought of change was paralysing given my childhood experience back in 1995. Having to repeat a grade made me feel like I was not adequate to fit into the fast-growth pipeline yet. Despite many forced and self-imposed changes in my life, I was still scared of making a drastic change. I resorted to reading about all the corporate chameleons and asking them how they grew into the career of their dreams. All this was unless given that most mentors are referencing a reality I was not living in at the time. This frustrated me and I found relief when chatting with colleagues about what to do to grow their careers given my experience. It was a “how to jump” conversation that we were having. I totally lost the plot when I created Being An Analyst and only realised now that I have a different audience. My YouTube audience is no different to my corporate colleagues who needed a chat about how to shake things up. Whether they chat in small groups for peer reviews or seek out someone like me for a reflection. Either of these options would be a new perspective and they might drop the fear and “JUMP”.

In the evolving world of data analytics, analysts stand at the pinnacle of innovation, but certain habits can hinder their journey to excellence. This article highlighted three such habits: over-reliance on external validation, which can diminish genuine confidence; procrastination, which risks outdated insights and compromises work quality; and neglecting self-care, potentially leading to burnout and reduced analytical effectiveness. By addressing these habits, analysts can foster a fulfilling career marked by authenticity, timeliness, and holistic well-being.

What is Data Governance and Why Important?

Have you ever created a database in your organisation without proper governance? If so, then this episode is just for you. In this discussion, we will explore the significance of data governance and its importance. I will also shed some light on the connection between the information security office led by the Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) and the data office led by the Chief Data Officer (CDO).

By the end of this episode, you will have a clear understanding of how both offices work together to carry out board directives in your databases. You will also realise the need for reporting controls back to the board, and how the auditing function plays a crucial role in ensuring that board directives are implemented effectively. So, if you're looking to enhance your knowledge on the subject, this episode is a must-listen.

Are you Working From Home or Remotely?

If not, did you know that as Analysts, we can tailor our work environments to suit our preferences, promoting a sense of autonomy and independence? Moreover, access to a global talent pool has expanded, enabling organisations to hire the best talent regardless of geographical constraints. Overall, remote and hybrid job models empower analysts to design their workdays more efficiently, reduce burnout, and foster a healthier work-life equilibrium, ultimately benefiting their well-being and job satisfaction.
