6 reasons why sensitivity and strength go hand in hand

Sensitive and strong; Can we really be both?

Did you ever notice that most of the sensitive people you know are also the strongest?

When it comes to inner strength and resilience, the ability to handle difficult situations and stress and when overcoming obstacles, sensitive people seem to have almost a secret ability to deal with the challenges of life.

Just look at Princess Di, Gandhi, Mother Theresa & Eleanor Roosevelt. They did not only survive hardship, they thrived and they learned from their experiences. They developed new abilities and they came out stronger than when they went in. They did not get through their difficult times by suppressing their feelings or being stoic. They came through them by being themselves completely and by using their sensitive abilities to the fullest.

Sensitivity is often seen as a sign of weakness in our culture, especially when a sensitive person experiences too much stress. We can easily become overwhelmed by too much sensory input, doing too much and ignoring our limits or just by being surrounded by too many people. This can cause us to become emotional and can make us feel like we want to escape it all. We often show our emotions, both the good and the bad ones and this can make others think that we are playing it up. The intensity of our feelings can even convince them that we aren't able to handle the situation.

But what's even worse is that we often see ourselves that same way.

Being sensitive in today's world can feel like you are in an HD (High Definition) Drama Film. It can be overwhelming and intense and our own emotional way of being can have us believe that we are not as tough as others. That we are weak or that there is something wrong with us or that we need others in order to give our life direction. This is a dangerous and self-destructive concept that can easily affect our self-esteem and makes us assume a victim role.

The truth is that our sensitivity allows us to be strong and capable and even thrive while faced with setbacks. The same traits that make us sensitive are the same traits that give us tremendous inner strength. And the key to developing that inner strength is not to try to be less sensitive, but to recognize that that sensitivity is your strength and to fully embrace it!

Here are 6 reasons why I think that sensitivity and strength go hand in hand:Awareness : Because sensitives are more aware of their environment and their feelings than others they are better able to understand when they feel stressed or overwhelmed and what to do to feel calm again. This allows them to handle difficult situations better instead of running away from them.

2. Creativity: Creative outlets give sensitives a medium to express their energy in a positive way. When the going gets tough, the possibility to express yourself creatively can be a really good way to let off some steam when you are faced with intense feelings and emotions. And this does not only serve you, but others as well because often we make the most beautiful things.

3. Empathy: Putting ourselves in someone else's shoes is something that sensitives do naturally. It gives other people a sense of recognition, while we increase our own understanding of human nature. In addition, our abhorrence of abuse, neglect and abuse of others gives us the motivation to stand for what we believe in.

4. Appreciation: Sensitives tend to pick up on a lot of details and they have a deep appreciation for beauty. That appreciation runs so deep that we see it reflected back in everything around us, every day anew. Even in the littlest of things. Our appreciation for the finer things in life strengthens our inner strength because we know that there is much to be thankful for and because it gives us a sense of inner peace, joy and happiness in our daily things.

5. Intuition: Sensitives have highly developed intuitive senses that give us a deep understanding of people and situations. This enables us to clearly see what is going on and what needs to happen.

6. Passion: Despite our sensitive and gentle nature, we sensitives are very passionate people. We feel our norms and values very strongly and we believe in creating a powerful energy that strengthens our resilience. It is this passion that enables us to keep going and take on the challenges of life, despite the risks and our own fears. We do what we believe in, because we strongly believe in it and this makes us incredibly brave.

Knowing that you possess these traits means that you can rely on yourself fully. If you believe that you are a strong, capable person WITH the inner means to handle every situation, then you will realize that you are not dependent on other people and that you yourself are strong enough to handle everything that life throws at you.

The more you love, accept and become yourself when you are faced with a challenge or a problem, the more sensitive, creative, empathic, intuitive and passionate you are, the more you will start to actually feel those traits. The more you embrace being a sensitive person, expressing yourself creatively, taking the time to be alone with nature, listening to music that soothes your souls and admiring the beauty of the world around you, the stronger you will feel. Being a sensitive person is not a jail sentence that convicts you to a life in which you hide yourself away from being overstimulated and struggle with protecting yourself against a life full of lies.
