#60 - Interesting times...
Just over 2 years ago this week was when ChatGPT was released to us, becoming the first AI tool to hit the public consciousness. A LOT has happened since then in this space...
We've seen the emergence of many AI tools, the move towards lifelike voice interaction, and yesterday (Dec 9th 2024) Sora was finally released by OpenAI, joining a number of tools that will make video creation as simple as describing what you want. Only, that's not simple is it, as we've seen from the whole prompting industry that has grown up.
So, as the old Chinese curse alludes to, we live in interesting times. But with power comes responsibility - and as we look forward to 2025, how are we as educators going to leverage the power of AI into our teaching and learning, and help our students do the same?
I'm currently creating a module on "Responsible use of AI" to deliver next year - I'll keep you up to date on how I approach this, the tools and process I use and find useful. But for now, here's a pre-Christmas smorgasbord of goodies to play with between the shopping and grading (yes - it does have to be done!)
Synthesia - lifelike avatars
I had a quick play with Synthesia.io - you can generate 36 minutes of video with their free account, choosing avatars, adding a script and generally setting your video up just how you want it. Here's a seasonal one I made just for you! Santa is completely AI generated, all I did was edited the script a little...
The evolution of AI - nice graphic

Napkin for super graphics
One of my go-to (free!) apps to create graphics is Napkin. They just updated this fabulous tool with new styles etc - check out the quick video below for a 1-minute run-through of some of the new features, then go and add the bookmark to your essential AI apps list if you haven't already! NOTE - If you have already used Napkin, open it up and then do a page refresh in your browser. Until I did that, I didn't get the new settings cogwheel in the top right of my screen.
Claude gets writing styles
And not just pre-defined styles like Concise, Business etc. You can also now upload examples of your own writing, and Claude creates a custom style based on this! This could be a game-changer! Here's a Youtube video that goes into all the nooks and crannies...
An interesting read ...
From the World Bank and 100 student voices...
OK, that'll do for this time - off to start the grading now... See you next time!

Notion
This is my tool of choice now for collecting all the bits'n'pieces of information I squirrel away for talk, articles and presentations. I can then generate webpages in a snap and share them, and they update in real-time as I add new info to them! There's so much you can do in Notion - well worth a look:
