7 Frustrations You May Encounter When Purchasing a Home

Homeownership is often regarded as the American dream. However, it can sometimes feel like an all-out battle, especially in this age of increasing mortgage rates and a notable scarcity of property listings.

Speak to any prospective homebuyers, and they'll quickly confess that the journey toward owning a home is a mixture of excitement and frustration. To help you brace for what lies ahead, here's a list of some common hurdles you might face. Don't worry, the struggle is worth it in the end. Stay strong and soldier on!

Frustration No. 1: Problems with property viewing

You've found the perfect listing online and can't wait to see the real thing. However, the property owner seems to have other ideas which makes it difficult for you to schedule a viewing, let alone home inspections and walk-throughs later on. This can be quite exhausting for eager homebuyers.

Surely, if they're serious about selling—why else would they list the property—they could find a way to accommodate your visit? It can be incredibly frustrating dealing with uncooperative sellers.

Frustration No. 2: The 'spending freeze'

Scraping together a down payment is only the beginning. You also have to cover closing costs, and then start budgeting for moving expenses. With all the financial outflow, you'll find yourself on a self-imposed spending freeze. Even meals can become a luxury! You'll need to tighten your belt, at least temporarily.

Frustration No. 3: Postponing the interior design

You're brimming with ideas to decorate your new space. But, you'll likely have to hold off on that furniture shopping spree because not only will you use a good amount of savings on the home purchase, but any large purchases on credit could (more like will) affect your loan approval before closing.

Frustration No. 4: Inherited junk

The thrill of stepping into your new garage quickly dissipates when you discover it's filled with the previous owner's discarded items. While sellers are expected to clear out the property, sometimes you might inherit some unexpected 'treasures.' Time for an impromptu garage sale?

Frustration No. 5: Unpleasant parting gestures

Sometimes, negotiations can get heated and result in sellers leaving parting messages. Sellers can intentionally cause inconveniences for the new homeowners due to resentment from the transaction. Hence, it's essential to maintain good relations with the sellers whenever possible.

Frustration No. 6: Post-settlement disappointments

Finding out that the impeccable looking home has hidden flaws that need fixing can be a downer. You might discover hasty patch-up jobs or minor repair work that dampens the joy of moving into your dream home.

Frustration No. 7: Mystifying house mechanics

All appliances and systems seemed straightforward during the walk-through. But once you're alone in the house, everything seems bewildering. Tackling these puzzling systems might make you wish you had an engineering degree!

To avoid this frustration, have your agent coordinate a time where you can meet with the seller prior to closing to go over how everything works, or ask for a list of instructions on how certain things operate in the house.

Indeed, the journey to homeownership can have some challenges. Home sellers, too face their fair share of frustrations.
