7 Misconceptions about Dubai!
When I am speaking to Doctors who are interested in coming to work in Dubai, there are some common misconceptions that come up in our conversations;
1. Dubai is always too hot!
Yes it is true that the summer months in Dubai can get very hot and humid, however the majority of months are comfortable with lower temperatures. Furthermore, all the buildings are fully air-conditioned as well as the swimming pools, metro, buses and bus stops!
2. There is a strict dress code!
Dubai is the most liberal Islamic country when it comes to clothing. It is advisable to dress modestly when going to mosques and government / public places out of respect for the islamic culture. However, other than mosques and public places, you can wear what you want. Although most of the time I am wearing office / business attire, on the occasions where I have dressed more casually, as a western female I have never felt uncomfortable or in any way judged or frowned upon here in Dubai.
3. It’s too expensive to live in Dubai!
Dubai does not have to be expensive, (it can be easy to get used to an extravagant lifestyle here), however the truth is, Dubai actually offers fantastic options and variations of living conditions for people of all social and economic status. This claim is backed by a survey that shows that over 75% of people moving to UAE found they had more disposable income than they did in their home country and almost a quarter were able to purchase a property as a result.
4. Dubai is not tolerant of other religious beliefs!
Although Dubai is an Arabic country where the most practiced religion is Islam, there has always been a freedom to practice your own religion here, a value that is innate to one of UAE’s core principles which is tolerance. The first churches and temples were built in the late 50s and early 60s in Dubai, and religious celebrations have always been well respected and represented, all of which add to the sense of culture and spirit here.
5. Lack of women empowerment!
This is another common misconception about the country. HE Sheikha Lubna Al Qasimi became the first woman to hold a ministerial post in the United Arab Emirates in 2004, and in 2015, Dr. Amal Al Qubaisi was made the first female leader of the Federal National Council, not only in the UAE but in the entire Arab world; that’s to show how not just Dubai, but generally UAE, women are highly respected. As a western expat female, I have never faced any issues in Dubai, I always feel so respected and I have not ever felt limited because of my gender.

6. You must always speak in Arabic in Dubai
English is a generally spoken language in Dubai and around the United Arab Emirates, so you don’t have to worry about communication issues. The hospitals always have translators available if ever there are patients that do not speak English.
7. There is no sense of permanence
The UAE government has introduced renewable 10-year visas for Doctors, investors, as well as special talents which has paved way for expats to commit their long term future to Dubai.
