7 tips to handle job loss

However we like or hate our job, for most of us that job is important. It has given us safety , stability may be growth and suddenly loosing all that can be challenging especially if this is your first time being laid off.

Due to Covid-19 crisis, the scenario has worsened and rate of unemployment is rising fast. So if you are one of them who has lot his job in this crisis or might be on the verge of loosing this job, this article could be useful for you.

  1. Accept and Acknowledge - Anyone can be asked to go. I have seen many of the CEO's and top executives getting fired on a day's notice. Rather than being in denial mode, its better if you accept the fact, don't try to create internal fight, it will further increase your stress.
  2. Speak to your Family Openly - Speak to your family openly and share your emotions. Remember that job is only one part of your whole life. Your support system is still there for you to rise back.
  3. Take some time off - Many people say time is the best doctor, so give some time for yourself to settle down, take pause and reflect. We are running so fast that we do not really give any time to reflect on our lives.
  4. Way Forward - This time off will give you good time to think about your strengths , weaknesses, likes and dislikes. Enjoy this freedom for a moment and start exploring various options.
  5. Reach Out - Reach out to your past colleagues / contacts in your professional and personal network for searching possible opportunities. If you are thinking about venturing on your own - start connecting with those set of people.
  6. Finances - It could take you anywhere from few days to 6 months for your next job search. Take a realistic assessment of your expenses , EMI's and see what adjustments you will need to make to survive for next 6 months without any income.
  7. Best is Yet to Come - Many famous people like Walt Disney or Oprah Winfrey were asked to leave the job which helped them to explore their real talents. Most people who lost their jobs narrate that as "best thing happened to them" in the hindsight.

Last but not the least, do not loose the HOPE because someone has said " tough times don't last but tough people do".

Take care & stay strong
