7 'Under' Factors for Drowning Use this at your next in service training
I developed these 7 ‘unders' as a simple way to remember, recognize and reduce near drownings.
There are at least 7 causal factors that when one or more are in place, can result in injury or death.
I developed these after a (minor)near drowning at a 'swim at your own risk" pool. They also apply to life-guarded pools.
Near-drownings can become life threatening or life changing.
1. UNDER SUPERVISED
The person is improperly supervised by their parent or guardian.(such as a 12 year old watching their 7 year old brother) or not supervised at all.
2.UNDER THE INFLUENCE
Alcohol or drugs affect and impair coordination and judgment
3. UNDER PRESSURE
Risky behavior such as horseplay while trying to impress others.
4. UNDER THEIR BREATH
Breath holding games contribute to near drownings.
5. UNDER SKILLED
Not having basic water safety skills or confidence which leads to panic.
6. UNDERESTIMATE
Not being aware of the dangers of deep water or Pool dynamics, like a speed water-slide exit pool.
7. UNDER WATER
Pretty Obvious, I Know, but that's where people end up with an airway obstruction and without an oxygen supply.
