91% left because of the leader

91% left because of the leader

I did a poll on Linkedin asking the following.

Have you ever left your job because of your manager or leadership?

The results:

  1. Yes: 91%
  2. No: 3%
  3. I wanted to but could not:6%

From over 200 voters 97% either left or wanted to due to the leadership. And by the way , this includes directors and CEO's in the vote.

Leadership is so tough, I know, I do it & did it. It is far easier to get it wrong than right. You need to manage up. manage down, sideways and so much more. And no one really care about the leader 😁.

So we know what our people like right. What about what they DO NOT LIKE?

here is a high level list, get us all thinking and acting. Happy leading people.

Here is your list.

  • Micromanagement
  • Poor communication with inconsistent messaging & confusion
  • Not having a “safe environment” to talk
  • Lack of empathy & insensitive leadership
  • Lack of appreciation
  • A lack of decision making is An issue for employees
  • Favouritism and demonstrating a bias is a real issue. I have personally seen accounts handed out to “the usual clan” which causes a significant wedge in morale and increases turnover of talent.

My thoughts – no one said it would be easy!!

These survey summaries, collectively illustrate that employees want leaders who are communicative, empathetic, trustworthy, and supportive, while they strongly dislike micromanagement, poor communication, and unfair treatment.

As a leader getting the balance between the above & the company objectives are tough, but no one said it would be easy
