Monday

📍We started the week off with the news that five major production hubs from across the global apparel supply chain have experienced a 42% increase in high heat days over the last two decades, new research suggests.

The analysis by the Global Labor Institute, part of Cornell University ’s School of Industrial and Labor Relations, which tracks the impact of heat and flooding on fashion production hubs and workers, shows that the frequency of heatwaves is accelerating at an alarming rate, and warns that heat and flood risk is widespread for a further 23 key fashion hubs.

📍We also reported that ultra fast fashion giant SHEIN has appointed former CottonConnect chairman Ram Gidoomal as chairman of its new External ESG Advisory Board.

The Chinese-owned company has also established 'Regional Strategy and Corporate Responsibility Committees' to provide independent advice to Shein’s leadership team.

Tuesday

📍On Tuesday, we broke the news that Australian recycling company Samsara Eco , which works in partnership with athleticwear brand lululemon has developed enzymes capable of recycling nylon 6.

Building on its existing capabilities to infinitely recycle nylon 6,6 and polyester, Samsara says its latest enzyme technology can break down nylon 6, including coloured and dyed blends, into its original building block that can then be reused repeatedly without losing quality.

📍We also revealed that sportswear giant PUMA Group has signed a multi-year letter of intent (LOI) to source sustainable wood-based fibre from a new production plant being developed by Finnish textile innovator SPINNOVA® and Brazilian cellulosic pulp giant Suzano .

The LOI is a non-binding agreement for booking volumes of Spinnova fibre from the 'Woodspin' factory which is to be built at an as yet undisclosed location expected to be close to one of Suzano's existing pulp mills in Brazil.

Wednesday

📍On Wednesday we revealed that campaigners say they are "deeply worried" that European Commission plans to merge and simplify new rules on corporate sustainability will weaken protection of workers, human rights and the environment.

The Clean Clothes Campaign , which works to protect workers in global fashion supply chains, is urging commission president Ursula von der Leyen not to backtrack on landmark legislation such as the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive and the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive.

📍We also reported that increasing levels of automation in Bangladesh’s garment industry have led to 3% drop of female workers over the last 10 years, according to a new report.

The report, ‘Technology Upgradation of the RMG Industries in Bangladesh’, says that female participation fell from 56% to 53% between 2014 and 2023, attributing the decrease primarily to an increased investment in the latest textile technology, and the role of machine operators subsequently becoming obsolete.

The Business & Human Rights Resource Centre NGO tracked 28 cases of alleged human rights abuses which it says are linked to "ruthless brand purchasing practices" between March and September this year.

The aim of the Recycled Polyester Guidelines V1.0 and the Industry Standard Implementation Approach V1.0 is to drive transparency in recycled polyester by addressing critical aspects of the production process, which it is hoped will help drive transparency throughout the whole textile industry.
