Today we share excepts from our recently concluded insightful Panel Session titled "Envisioning Africa’s Growth through a Thriving Economy: Private Health Sector Perspectives." at the ASIS summit on Thursday 25th of July 2024.

The panel session brought together key stakeholders from both the public and private health sectors, including Nigeria's health commissioners, Leading private health actors, and other influential voices in the healthcare and finance sectors; marking a significant step towards reimagining Africa's healthcare landscape with focus on the continent’s most populous country – Nigeria.

The session was opened with a resonant welcome address by Zouera Youssoufou , MD/CEO, Aliko Dangote Foundation wherein she focused on the roles of private sector in driving innovation, improving healthcare delivery to address critical challenges and unlock new opportunities for not just health, but social and economic growth and development.

Dr. Abdu Mukhtar, National Coordinator, Presidential Initiative for Unlocking the Healthcare Value Chain (PVAC) delivered the keynote address where he highlighted the untapped potential of Africa's healthcare market, estimated to be worth $259 billion by 2030. He introduced the Federal Government Investment Fund, aimed at mobilizing $1 billion to boost local drug production in Nigeria.

The session, moderated by Dr. Mories Atoki (Hon.) , CEO, ABCHealth focused on the fact that investing in health is not just a social imperative but also a significant economic opportunity; and this was echoed in the panelists’ views as they shared valuable insights. Subject-matter experts, government and private sector constituted the panel leaders including:

The diversity of the panel underscored the multifaceted approach needed to transform Africa's health sector and drive economic growth, where each panelist brought unique perspectives and concrete initiatives to the table, collectively painting a picture of a future where public-private collaboration will drive significant improvements in Africa's healthcare landscape. Their contributions ranged from policy insights and financing strategies to technological innovations, health insurance models and on-the-ground implementation examples, providing a comprehensive view of the opportunities and challenges in African healthcare.

The Panel Session concluded with a strong consensus on the critical role of the private sector (health and non-health) in shaping Africa’s economic future.
