Accelerating into the fourth industrial revolution
When Klaus Schwab coined the term the “Fourth Industrial Revolution” [1] at the World Economic Forum, he was referring to “a blurring of the lines between the physical, digital and biological spheres”.
At the point this was said, in 2016, the risk of a global flu-like pandemic was overlooked by most of us.
And yet, over this past year, the challenge presented by Covid-19 has been a catalyst for the very thing Klaus envisioned. We are harnessing scientific understanding, technology and automation, to accelerate our response and benefit society in the most tangible way – literally, saving lives.
At ABB Robotics, our mission is to bring leading technologies to real applications that have real benefits for our customers.
Our US-based customer, Boyce Technologies, was able to repurpose its entire production line and start mass production of FDA-approved ventilators within a month – a process that usually takes a year.
With our support, Boyce has the flexibility to help address the critical shortage of ventilators in their home state of New York. This was only possible through the partnership of smart robotics and people, with their creativity and problem-solving skills.
“What’s really amazing is when you give somebody robots they have to learn to program them, and how that elevates their expertise is truly amazing,” said Charles Boyce, president and founder of Boyce Technologies.
This is just one of many examples of where robotics has enabled organizations to respond quickly, flexibly and safely to this pandemic around the world, from automating the lab testing of Covid-19 samples, to the production of protective equipment.
Tiki Safety, a respirator manufacturer boosted production to meet global demand by installing an ABB robot; masks are now produced ten times faster than before.
In Singapore, ABB robots process over 50,000 Covid-19 testing samples per day.
We see a future where the physical and digital worlds are fully integrated. Machines, factories, buildings, vehicles and entire value chains communicate and self-optimize – powered by Artificial Intelligence.
But we are not just seeing this transformation, we are helping to create it.
