Accept the Balloon
Passing out "balloons" is part of your job as a leader.

Accept the Balloon

One time when my boys were ages two and four, they were each offered a balloon as we walked out of Trader Joe’s. My two--year-old took it with a big smile and jumped up and down in delight. My four-year-old said “no thanks” and walked out of the store.

I caught up to him and asked why he didn’t want a balloon. He told me he thought he would feel too bad when it flew away.

We walked a few more steps as I pondered this.

Then I stopped and turned to him and said, “We are getting you a balloon.”

And that’s what we did.

Soon, he was walking with a bounce in his step as he played with his balloon alongside his brother, both laughing and enjoying the moment.

Leaders, it’s hard sometimes to stop and enjoy the moment, especially when deadlines are tight and you aren’t sure of that end result.

Celebrations and recognition not only reinforce good work, they also give your team a chance to recover and enjoy camaraderie. Plus research shows time together that’s more relaxed results in more creativity and innovation.

Leaders, be sure to acknowledge milestones to keep your team engaged.

The right way to recognize milestones:

  • Have the invitation come from you.
  •  Let it be known that you are expecting everyone to be there.
  • Be the first one there.
  • Be ready with something specific to acknowledge or ask about for each team member. Yes, study up.
  • Work the room and when possible find a way to talk individually to each team member.
  •  Assign someone to take photos to memorialize the event and share them afterward.
  •  Refer to the event with the team afterwards. Tell a story about it.

What are some tried and true ways to celebrate milestones? Take your team out or have food brought in. Hand out certificates. Have fun with it.

Whatever you do, make sure to get your hard-working team members to accept their balloon. It’s not only good for them, but it’s good for your organization.
