Access Networks that Drive Innovation: the 2023 Tsukuba Forum
For more than 30 years, the Tsukuba Forum has been the leading global event for innovation in access networks. This year’s version promises to be no exception.
Held at the NTT Tsukuba R&D Center in Ibaraki Prefecture and hosted by NTT, the event takes place on May 17-18. Co-hosts are the Information & Telecommunications Engineering Association of Japan, the Communication Line Products Association of Japan, and the Japan Telecommunications Equipment and Materials Manufacturers Cooperative Association
The theme of this year's Forum is "Access networks that drive innovation—Staying connected from now onwards." A major focus of exhibits, panel discussions and keynote speeches at the event will be on the necessity of ensuring that networks are robust enough to maintain connections during large-scale disasters and system failures.
The exhibition will include a number of R&D initiatives concerning access-network technologies that support social infrastructure, as well as initiatives in new areas focused on changes in social conditions and needs. Exhibits are in four main categories:
- Diversification and enhancement of services
- Smarter operations
- Development of new business areas
- Model Networks
Additionally, both days are planned to feature keynote speeches on the following topics:
- IOWN 1.0 to IOWN 2.0, Toward the Future
- Towards Comprehensive Engineering
Panel discussions are scheduled to cover:
- Expanding human sensations and activities enabled by the evolution of wireless technology
- Creating a "continuously connected access network"

Daniel O’Connor joined the NTT Group in 1999 when he began work as the Public Relations Manager of NTT Europe. While in London, he liaised with the local press, created the company’s intranet site, wrote technical copy for industry magazines and managed exhibition stands from initial design to finished displays.
Later seconded to the headquarters of NTT Communications in Tokyo, he contributed to the company’s first-ever winning of global telecoms awards and the digitalisation of internal company information exchange.
Since 2015 Daniel has created content for the Group’s Global Leadership Institute, the One NTT Network and is currently working with NTT R&D teams to grow public understanding of the cutting-edge research undertaken by the NTT Group.
