Achieve Energy Flexibility with BESS Deployment
The Smarter E Europe this year was a great success, with a special focus on “24/7 carbon-free energy”. According to the United Nations-Energy sector, the 24/7 Carbon-free Energy (CFE) initiative aims to realize that every kilowatt-hour of electricity consumption is met with carbon-free electricity sources, every hour of every day, everywhere.
The 24/7 CFE goal is in response to the urgent need for de-carbonization and sustainability across global economy. It also stresses the importance of energy flexibility through comprehensive renewable energy adoption. Energy flexibility not only ensures energy operators but also enables energy consumers to balance power supply and power demand, jointly achieving de-carbonization at a lower cost.
Along with the growing adoption of renewable energies worldwide, the energy storage system (ESS) deployment is also on the rise. Battery, chemical, electrochemical, mechanical and thermal are the most familiar ESS categories. Among them, battery energy storage system (BESS) still takes the dominance during the exhibition. Varying in size and type, BESS can be further divided into small residential BESS, commercial and industrial (C&I) BESS, and large utility scale BESS.
One of the primary advantages of BESS is its ability to manage energy costs effectively via the local or cloud EMS. In most commercial and industrial settings, energy consumption patterns often lead to high demand charges. A BESS can store energy during off-peak hours when electricity prices are lower and discharge it during peak hours to reduce demand charges, leading to significant cost savings. By discharging stored energy during peak demand period, the BESS can also shave off the peaks, reducing the overall peak demand.
The integration of BESS also enhances grid reliability and stability. In areas prone to power outages or grid instability, a BESS can provide backup power, ensuring uninterrupted operations. This is particularly critical for industries where a single power interruption can result in substantial financial losses. BESS reinforces grid flexibility by providing a buffer between fluctuating energy demand and rigid energy supply. It allows property operators or business runners to achieve greater energy independence, by reducing reliance on external energy sources and thus enhancing their resilience to energy market fluctuations.
Besides, the BESS facilitates the integration of renewable energy sources, primarily solar and wind. It stores excess and clean energy generated during periods of high renewable production and discharges it when production is low, ensuring steady and economical energy supply. It is crucial for BESS to accommodate variable nature of renewable energy sources. The two are mutually reinforcing each other, together contributing to sustainability and de-carbonization targets.
In addition, as the number of EVs increases, the demand for sufficient and reliable DCFC infrastructure grows. The proliferation of electric vehicles (EVs) necessitates efficient load management to prevent grid overloads as well as costly grid upgrades. With a BESS, EV charging stations can participate in demand response programs, and increase their charging capacity by storing excess electricity when demand is low and releasing it when demand is high. In doing so, it helps balance energy supply and demand, reduces peak loads, and provides financial incentives for participation.

To help achieve energy flexibility at demand side, Infypower provides reliable, scalable and durable BESS solutions, fulfilling global grid code certifications and battery safety certifications. It’s a compact and seamless integration of self-developed BMS, EMS, PCS and battery pack, feature building block modular design. It’s also the one-fit-all solution tailored for various on-grid & off-grid C&I energy storage, and EV charging combined energy storage demands.
The latest ICS500K1KR, totaling 500kW/860kWh, allows up to 4 sets in parallel to achieve 2MW/3.44MWh. In topological design, each battery group is connected to separate PCS group in independent operation to enhance battery safety and the working life. By the integration of MPPT power inverters, it supports max. 120kW solar power input. The STS cube could feed max. 500kW backup power to the loads within 20mS during power outages.
With increasingly more BESS deployment at the demand side or user side, it could help C&I facilities to achieve energy flexibility by peak shaving, dynamic power expansion, cost saving and off-grid backup power support. On the other hand, BESS deployment will eventually drive renewable energy transition towards 24/7 Carbon-free Energy future.
