A Change in Plans

Late 2019, I prepared my 2020 marketing plan.  This plan identified specific actions to be taken and time frame for these actions. It also included goals for each month of this year and longer terms goals for the next five years.

Things were going pretty much according to plan until the middle of March, 2020 when the full impact of the COVID19 Crisis hit home.

Suddenly my 2020 marketing plan was no longer viable.

Once the initial shock wore off, it became obvious that simply waiting for the crisis to end was not feasible. If I wanted my business to survive the pandemic … which I most assuredly do … some form of proactive response was necessary.

My online research led to the conclusion that a short-term marketing plan would be both reasonable and doable.

Ideally this plan would help me survive the economic uncertainty and hopefully, also position my business to survive post-pandemic.

So far, so good.

And given that good things get better when shared for the benefit of others, here are three things that I learned from preparing my 90-Day Marketing Plan.

Essential Actions

From the perspective of the pandemic, essential services are those factors that most everyone needs to survive the crisis.

In a 90-Day Marketing Plan, essential actions are those things that we need to do for our business to survive the crisis.

The descriptions of these actions will strip the details to the bare essentials: what?, when?, how? and so what?

Predetermining these essential actions simplifies decision-making down the road.  Instead of scrambling to decide what next, simply follow the plan.  If the plan doesn’t address the specific issue to be decided, the best choice is the one most closely aligned with the plan.

Focus On Doing What You Can Do

Among the many challenges of the pandemic is the daily flood of coronavirus information.  Not sure about you but I am easily overwhelmed by this information overload.

An what makes the overload really stressful is the fact that apart from practicing proper personal hygiene and social distancing, there is virtually nothing that we can do about the coronavirus information.

A 90-Day Marketing Plan makes it possible to shift the focus from what we can’t do anything about to something we can undertake and complete.

Instead of more worrying and hand-wringing about the latest COVID-19 update, we can direct our attention and energy to working on our business.

As a result … reduced stress and better, more productive use of your time and energy.
