ADB, ECOM Sign $100 Million Social Loan to Enhance Climate Resilience of Coffee Value Chain in Asia Pacific

ADB, ECOM Sign $100 Million Social Loan to Enhance Climate Resilience of Coffee Value Chain in Asia Pacific

The global supply of coffee depends on the hard work of millions of farmers worldwide.

However, rising temperatures, unpredictable rainfall, and increased pest and disease pressures caused by climate change threaten coffee production.

We have partnered with ECOM to boost sustainable agricultural practices and enhance the productivity and resilience of smallholder farmers in India, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, and Viet Nam.

"Safeguarding coffee farmer livelihoods and resilience in the face of climate change is crucial for maintaining the stability of one of the world's most significant agricultural supply chains.” - Suzanne Gaboury, ADB Director General for Private Sector Operations

US Policy Changes Likely to Impact Asia and Pacific’s Growth

While economic growth in developing Asia and the Pacific remains steady, US policy changes under the incoming Trump administration may impact the region, says ADB's latest Asian Development Outlook report.

Changes to US trade, fiscal, and immigration policies could dent growth and boost inflation. Because these significant policy changes are expected to take time and be rolled out gradually, the effects on the region would materialize beyond this forecast horizon.

Larger and more rapid US policy shifts than assumed in the baseline could worsen the outlook, as could greater geopolitical tensions or continued property market fragility in the People's Republic of China.

This is fantastic news! Climate change, combined with a 25% inflation rate in March, has significantly impacted coffee production in southern Laos. These challenges are forcing labourers to seek higher-paying jobs in Thailand. Other factors include a worker shortage, farmers shifting to grow more profitable crops like cassava instead of coffee, and rising costs driving the workforce away.ADB’s social loans to address climate resilience will definitely make an impact, but will not address the broader problem of high inflation which is causing  labor shortages.
