Addressing Device Affordability and Access to Bridge the Digital Gap

Africa is witnessing remarkable growth in internet accessibility. Yet, significant challenges persist, particularly concerning the affordability of handsets and data and a lack of literacy and digital skills that hinder mobile internet adoption.

Only 25% of the total population is connected to the Internet, leaving 74% unconnected, notably in rural areas, among women, and the youth. Sub-Saharan Africa, in particular, faces a substantial connectivity gap, with an average of 78% of its population remaining unconnected - GSMA

As a prominent figure in the African Telecommunications industry, AXIAN Telecom recognises the urgency of addressing these challenges. We are taking significant strides to bridge the digital divide in Africa by focusing on affordability and access to mobile internet. We understand the importance of ensuring underserved populations can access mobile internet and recognise that it is a key driver of economic and social development. 

Enhancing Device Affordability

One of the major barriers to mobile internet adoption is the cost of smart devices. AXIAN Telecom is proactively tackling this challenge by distributing affordable devices to customers. In 2023 alone, we distributed 417,000 devices to customers across our operations, emphasising our commitment to increasing digital accessibility. This move has facilitated the adoption of smart devices among communities that may otherwise struggle to afford them. 

In addition, we are working to lower the prices of smart devices. For example, the Wikif Max initiative in Madagascar offers affordable smartphones, allowing more people to access the benefits of mobile internet. This focus on affordability is instrumental in narrowing the mobile internet usage gap, particularly in regions where the cost of technology can be prohibitive. 

Promoting Digital Connectivity and Inclusivity

AXIAN Telecom's efforts to enhance device affordability directly impact increasing digital connectivity and promoting inclusivity.

With smartphone penetration reaching 50% of our subscriber base, we have seen an annual growth rate of 31% in active data users, signalling a significant shift toward digital connectivity across our footprint. 

The impact of these initiatives extends beyond simply providing access to devices. By making mobile internet more affordable and accessible, we are fostering greater digital empowerment within communities. This, in turn, enables individuals to access educational resources, healthcare information, and economic opportunities, thereby promoting overall social and economic progress.
