Adriana Martinez, R&D Product Manager tells us about her personal journey and her thoughts on how we can get more women and girls into the sciences
What or who was behind you getting into science/a scientific role?
I was born and raised in the world of textile manufacturing. My father is a mechanical engineer and he worked for an American-Mexican company for more than 30 years (we lived inside the factory for 13 years.) When I was five years old, I visited my father’s office and thought when I grow up, I can be like him. My father was an inspiration to many co-workers and in a time where there were no women engineers, he was also an inspiration to me.
What was your career journey, how did you end up in the role at CPW?
I did a chemical engineering degree, but I was really interested in the food industry. I had a very good thesis mentor that helped me embrace food science. I started my career in the quality team of a meat and sausage company before joining a nutritional supplements business where I discovered a real calling for designing products to help people get better nutrition and a better quality of life. After a spell in the pet nutrition industry, I realized I need to go back to my true passion and calling - that’s why I joined CPW three years ago. CPW is really aligned with my true passion and personal values!
Who has inspired you most in life and why?
My mom and grandmother, both were pioneers in their respective generations. My grandmother is an independent woman who owned her business (a sock factory) and traveled the world. My mother is a principal of kindergartens, with a true altruistic vocation to help others - sharing her knowledge with disadvantaged women in the local community to create nutritious meals with very low budgets.
What are you most proud of?
Following my dreams, even if this has been quite a journey. After 16 years in the food industry, I know I’m doing what I really love - becoming a woman in science and business that really enjoys helping other girls to grow, encouraging them becoming an engineer, technician, specialist, etc. whatever they want to be.
What advice would you give to parents of young girls who want to get into science?
Encourage your girls, and all the girls around you to follow their dreams Give them support to believe all things are possible and they can become whatever they want. The journey isn’t always easy but with persistence, effort and belief it’s possible.
