1a.   Use these words to fill in the blanks:

  Fast, happily, slowly and strongly

1.     The turtle moved ___________.

2.     The winners waved ____________ at the crowd.

3.     The hurricane blew _____________ over the city.

4.     My sports car runs _____________.

Read the above sentences and complete the rule with the correct option, a or b.

b.     Fast, happily, slowly and strongly are adverbs they tell us:

1.     More about the action in a sentence.

2.     More about the person doing the action.

c.     Look at the sentences in 1a again. Which rule, a or b, is true?

1.     Adverbs go after the verb.

2.     Adverbs go before the verb.

d.  We make adverbs from adjectives like this:

Slow + ly = slowly

Happy + ly = happily

Strong + ly = strongly

Remember some adverbs are irregular.

 

3.  Complete the adjectives given below into adverbs:

4.     Read the race commentary. Choose the correct adverb to complete the sentences.

 

It’s the snowboarding championship today. The sun is shining and the crowd is talking WELL/NOISILY. The snowboarders are here. They are waiting DANGEROUSLY/QUIETLY. Ryan is first. He is going FAST/SADLY and he’s jumping EASILY/BADILY. The crowd is shouting LOUDLY/SLOWLY and he is smiling HAPPILY/SADLY. Now it’s Kelly’s turn. She’s starting WELL/SADLY. Oh no, she’s having problems. The crowd is watching QUIETLY/FAST. Oh dear, she can’t continue. She’s waving SADLY/NOISILY at the crowd. Better luck next time, Kelly.
