Africa Governance Centre Hosts the Ghana Election Roundtable: A Spotlight on Electoral Governance and Democracy

The Africa Governance Centre (AGC), a prominent institution dedicated to promoting good governance and democracy across the continent, is set to host the highly anticipated Ghana Election Roundtable in the lead-up to Ghana’s December 2024 general elections. This pivotal virtual event will convene experts, policymakers, and civil society leaders to address pressing issues in electoral governance, including the judiciary's role, voting rights, peacebuilding, and the impact of technology on elections.

Among the distinguished speakers for the event is Edite Ten Jua , former Vice President of the Constitutional Court and former Minister of Justice and Foreign Affairs of São Tomé and Príncipe, who is also a member of the AGC. Joining her will be Justice William Atuguba, a former Justice of the Supreme Court of Ghana, and Justice Dennis Dominic Adjei, a Justice of the Court of Appeal in Ghana and a Judge of the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights. The panel will also include Douglas Coltart , a prominent lawyer and human rights advocate from Zimbabwe; Professor Ernest Kofi Abotsi , Dean of the University of Professional Studies, Accra Law School and an Associate Professor of Law; Dr. Emmanuel Akwetey, Executive Director of the Institute for Democratic Governance - IDEG Ghana ; and Clement Kojo Akapame , an esteemed legal practitioner specializing in governance and democracy.

The two-hour roundtable is designed to serve as a neutral platform for stakeholders to engage in meaningful discussions and develop actionable strategies for strengthening electoral integrity and fostering peaceful political discourse. With the rapid evolution of technology and its implications for elections, the roundtable will also explore the challenges and opportunities presented by digital innovations in electoral processes.

As Ghana approaches its December 7, 2024, elections, this roundtable is a timely initiative to reflect on the nation’s democratic progress and chart a path forward for credible and transparent elections. The Africa Governance Centre aims to use this platform to reinforce the principles of accountability, transparency, and good governance, not only in Ghana but across the continent.

The Ghana Election Roundtable will be held virtually on Zoom on November 29, 2024 at 11:00 AM GMT. Interested participants are encouraged to register via the following link: https://us06web.zoom.us/webinar/register/3017325511619/WN_msFAOPDET5SYWytbq8jbzA.
