AI in 2024: Insights From our 5 Million Readers
That’s the question we asked our more than 5 million followers on LinkedIn. They responded by sharing the many ways AI had impacted their work and personal lives.
Most were hopeful. Some were funny. A few—pessimistic.
We read them all.
Every comment helped us better understand the social impact of AI. Most publications talk about the shiny new features and the billions of dollars invested in or made by AI. Very few consider the human impact of new technology and the way people interact with it.
Not us.
Checking the Pulse: The Impact of AI on Everyday Lives
So, what exactly did our users have to say about how AI transformed their lives this year?
Some people felt less hopeful about artificial intelligence. One shared their opinion of AI as mediocre and only useful for mundane tasks. Others questioned whether AI had any reasoning or creative capability and described the technology as over-hyped.
In all fairness, this line of thinking isn’t as uncommon as some might think. A presenter at the 2024 AI for Good Global Summit shared that AI pessimism was especially high in nations like the United Kingdom, Canada, and the United States. Interestingly, in places like China and Vietnam, optimism prevailed at a whopping 90%.
Still, no era of change has ever been met without resistance—and that resistance can sometimes push professionals at every level to finetune a product. It can also prompt regulations that ensure more equitable distribution of AI’s benefits.
Top 2024 Developments in AI
Those optimistic about AI have likely seen its powerful advancements over the past year and want to leverage it for personal and professional growth. Whether it’s growing a business or dabbling in a new artform, the possibilities are endless.
These are the top three developments we’re most excited about.
1. Video Generation
Open AI has dominated the AI industry since launching ChatGPT in 2022, but some say they dropped the ball on video generation. Users and industry experts generally agree that Google’s Veo beats OpenAI’s Sora by a landslide.
2. AI Employees
Virtual employees could help solopreneurs launch the world’s next wave of privately held businesses valued at $1 billion or more. Several companies have released “AI employees” that can handle specific workflows while you focus on what makes you most creative. This could make it incredibly easy to scale a business without growing the team.
3. Open Source Advancements
Open AI was one of the initial successes of open-sourced AI advancement, but it later changed its strategy. Since then, Google, Meta, LG, and several other tech companies have released open source models.
Meta describes its Llama as “open-source AI models you can fine-tune, distill and deploy anywhere.” This approach makes it easier for everyday users to contribute to AI innovation without the need for a computer science degree.
Ethical Implications of AI Implementation
There’s no denying its amazing benefits, but artificial intelligence still needs to grapple with its dark underbelly. Gemini telling users to eat one rock per day and RealPage’s rental price collusion are extreme examples. They nevertheless show some ethical implications of AI.
These have been the top AI ethical considerations in 2024:
One of the biggest fears echoed worldwide is the fear that AI will take people’s jobs. Most people agree that AI should disable bombs and do repetitive data entry work. But, should they also play soccer and paint? McKinsey Global Institute estimates that 30% of work hours in the US will likely be automated by 2030. Euronews found that women faced the greatest risk with 80% of their jobs at risk from generative AI.
This isn’t the only area where women face greater AI risks. One Brookings study found that women are more likely to be the victims of deepfakes, such as fake revenge porn. Deepfakes have also become a favorite tool among scammers and have contributed to credibility issues in politics and the news.
Despite efforts to improve the data sets training AI tools, chat bots still make things up and it can be pretty convincing. From the US to Canada to Australia, lawyers have submitted case briefs with fake, AI-generated cases. They looked so real that no one bothered to check. That is … until the cases made it before a judge.
Our Observations at GenAI
Thankfully, it’s not all doom and gloom. Several organizations and government bodies are banding together to create sensible AI regulations. In March 2024, the European Union passed the world’s first set of ground rules to regulate AI. It’s only a matter of time before other regions follow suit.
People are also organizing at the individual level. For example, at GenAI.Works we’ve seen an increased interest in AI upskilling. In fact, our top posts for 2024 were those sharing courses teaching people how to leverage AI to streamline their workflows and improve their lives.
So, now we ask you the question? How has AI impacted your life in 2024? Share your highlights with us in the comments!

10mOpinions on artificial intelligence are indeed divided. It is a tool that, in the hands of responsible people, can become a source of support and inspiration, but it should not take full control. The key lies in balance – AI can be an excellent assistant, but we should remain the leaders. Ultimately, it is up to us how we use it: whether as a means to simplify daily life or as a creative tool to enhance our capabilities. However, let’s remember that no technology has ever replaced empathy and ethics – the qualities that define us as human beings. 🙂

12hIt's fascinating to see the range of opinions on AI. You got the doomers freaking out about robots taking over, and then you got the techies all hyped up about a utopian future. The truth is probably somewhere in the middle. Deepfakes are a real concern, and we gotta figure out how to protect people from that kind of manipulation. What are the industry leaders doing to protect the integrity of this technology and make sure it's used for good?
It’s incredible to see the positive impact AI is having, but also important to acknowledge the challenges and uncertainties it brings. Generative AI
