AI in the Age of Humans: When the Unthinkable becomes Reality

AI in the Age of Humans: When the Unthinkable becomes Reality

Written by Marina Pantcheva, PhD , RWS Group .

The upcoming TAUS Massively Multilingual AI Conference in Albuquerque promises to be an exciting platform for conversations about the ever more important role AI plays in our lives. Among the thought-provoking sessions is “AI in the Age of Humans”, which aims to turn conventional AI discussions on their heads.

AI as an Augmenter of Human Capabilities

In the current public discourse on AI, we hear a lot about AI saving costs and potentially taking away jobs of translators and writers. No surprise, the discussions then center on the human-in-the-loop concept, emphasizing the relevance, importance, and irreplaceability of humans.

A lot of effort is put into stressing that AI won’t replace humans nor restrict their autonomy. AI is thus portrayed as a tool to enhance productivity and decision-taking, making everyone so much more efficient

That’s the standard business perspective, always striving for higher output and productivity. But what if we step away from business as usual and think tabula rasa: what new can the AI revolution bring us? How can it help improve the quality of communications, create applications and solutions that were unthinkable before?

Moving beyond the usual talk of efficiency and productivity, this panel asks, "What can AI bring us if we think beyond the business case?"

AI for Good and for the Humans

Imagine AI solutions that are more than just tools for cost savings—solutions that make it possible for individuals with disabilities to use language and communicate independently.

This panel discussion, moderated by Marina Pantcheva, PhD , will feature insights from a diverse group of experts. Each will bring their unique perspective on how AI expands human autonomy, creates new opportunities, and achieves breakthroughs that were previously unthinkable.

AI Recognition for non-standard Speech

During the session, Oscar Straker will share his personal experience using AI to overcome a speech disability. Oscar will demonstrate live how AI can provide greater autonomy to individuals with speech challenges.

This AI technology not only assists communication but also empowers users by adapting to unique speech patterns, facilitating everyday interactions.

AI Digital Humans for the Hearing-Impaired

Scott S. ( Amazon Web Services (AWS) ) will show how AI innovations empower the hearing-impaired community. Scott will present AI-driven digital human technology that translates content into sign language, offering real-time communication solutions.

This technology is crucial for accessibility, allowing deaf and hard of hearing individuals the ability to engage with digital media and important communications, such as emergency alerts, in a native language they understand. Yet another case where AI breaks down communication barriers to provide inclusive solutions.

And, of course, AI in Localization

No panel can be complete without talking about localization. Smartling ’s Olga Beregovaya , a superstar in the field, will bring her unique insights on how AI allows translators to transcend their traditional areas of expertise and take on more complex work.

Olga will touch on the potential of AI in multimodality, vision, and multilingual digital humans, along with the role of AI in empowering indigenous communities in South America.

The future is here

This session isn't just about the future of AI; it's about how AI can empower humans in ways we haven't yet imagined. Whether you're in the localization industry or just curious about the transformative power of AI, this conversation will open your eyes to what AI brings to humanity.

Join us in Albuquerque from October 2-4, 2024, to be part of this forward-thinking discussion. You can find more information about the event and register here.
