'AI Eksperimentariet' now becomes The A.I. Exploratorium

Dear readers,

When I started this little round of experiments in November of last year, I had no idea where it would take me.

My idea was to create a sort of 'repository' of thematically linked articles, all about the use cases for A.I. in professional communication.

One thing lead to another, and now - 24 issues later - I find myself publishing a biweekly A.I. newsletter with more than 2,300 loyal subscribers for which I am so grateful. 😊❤🙏

However, I am very much aware that around 50 percent of my connections and followers here on Linkedin are not Danish.

When I got into the A.I. consulting business last year (as an extension of my teaching), I figured it would be a minor side-gig and the clientele would be Danish corporations and organisations.

Instead, I have found myself travelling abroad and doing presentations for international organisations, like UEFA, as much as I am engaging with Danish clients.

I also enjoy the exchange of ideas around Artificial Intelligence I have found in various international Whatsapp groups, and I would like to be able to share my own thoughts and ideas more easily with the members there from all over the world.

And so, I have decided that because of the generally high level of English language proficiency in my Danish audience, it makes sense to switch to English in my newsletters.

I know it is a potentially risky move, but I am confident (and hopeful) that the benefits overall outweigh the risks.

Matthieu Lorrain from Google Deepmind has said: 'Content is liquid', meaning that in an A.I.-assisted future it does not matter what format you publish your content in - the consumer is going to decide what format they want to consume it in, e.g. as an article, a podcast, an animated movie etc.

I like to think that the same development will soon apply to language barriers as well. Until then, I hope my Danish readers are okay with this shift. 😊🙏

What's next?

I will continue to publish my experiments with A.I. biweekly in The A.I. Exploratorium (the next regular issue is next Sunday), where I focus on use cases and tinkering with different models and functionalities.

But I also want to write more analyses and commentary about Artificial Intelligence.

Right now, for instance, I am working on a piece about the future of textbook-writing, inspired by Ethan Mollick's recent post about teachers and professors synthesizing reading lists with A.I., effectively making mashups from different textbooks, which could eventually undermine publishing academic textbooks entirely.

I am also drafting pieces on the extent of the use of Shadow A.I. in companies, and analysis of reporting of how widely A.I. is currently used for work purposes, because the numbers vary greatly.

Instead of doing a newsletter with each article, I will link to them every 2 weeks in The A.I. Exploratorium as a sort of recap. If you want to catch the analyses and commentary as they are published, I recommend going to my profile and activating the 🔔 icon to get notifications about all posts.

State of A.I. 2024 Report

For the seventh time, Air Street Capital and Nathan Benaich has released the State of A.I. Report - a whopping 212-page beast of a study. The Youtube channel A.I. Explained has a nice 21-minute run-through of highlights here.

Global CommTech Report 2024

This last week, Purposeful Relations released this year's Global CommTech Report, which has a lot of interesting insights into the communication industry's use of A.I.

You can download the report or listen to an A.I. audio overview on their website. I also recommend reading professor Anne Gregory's remarks on the report, where we find ourselves as an industry, and the way forward.

Use these A.I. costume ideas to get ready for a spooky Halloween!

Mikkel Frimer-Rasmussen has put together a fun little Custom GPT that can help you generate not only ideas for costumes but also complete lists of materials you will need and how to prepare them and put it all together. It is really neat! 🎃🧛♂️👻

The Custom GPT Halloween Kostumeguide starts off in Danish, but you can just ask it to switch to any other language when you prompt it the first time. 😉👌

Have fun!

Major disagreements on how soon we can expect an advanced form of Artificial Intelligence

CEO of OpenAI Sam Altman caused a bit of a stir recently, when he announced on his blog that: '...it is possible we will have superintelligence in a few thousand days'.

This week, CEO of Anthropic (who created Claude, an A.I. rival to ChatGPT) Dario Amodei wrote about what he calls 'powerful A.I. (I do not like the term "AGI")' and said: '... I think it could come as early as 2026...'.

Now, such predictions from the CEOs of two of the world's frontier models might cause a bit of alarm...

How soon until we have SkyNet for real? (Credit: Terminator, Orion Pictures, 1984.)

Thankfully, we also have Meta's chief A.I. scientist Yann LeCun, who on Friday gave the Wall Street Journal interview This AI Pioneer Thinks AI Is Dumber Than a Cat.

In it, LeCun explains why any sort of advanced form of A.I. will require a fundamentally different type of training than is currently being used by most of the top companies (i.e. Scaling Laws, throwing more data and compute power at the models to make them smarter).

Do you have any questions or ideas for the newsletter?

If so, I’d love to hear from you, either directly or in the comments section. An exploratorium is always more fun when the experience is shared with others.

Thank you for your continued interest in reading the A.I. Exploratorium!

My name is Jesper Andersen, and I am an independent communication advisor. My core areas of expertise are communication measurement and evaluation, communication strategies, Thought Leadership, and the use of Artificial Intelligence and how it is transforming the entire field of communication.

I teach the MBA and Master’s programmes at Quadriga University in Berlin, speak regularly at conferences, and conduct workshops and training sessions.

If you’re facing a challenge where you think my experience and skills could be helpful, or if you’d simply like to exchange ideas and perspectives on modern communication, I would be more than happy to start with a non-committal chat and we can take it from there.
