Intel Corporation , as the Official Worldwide AI Platform Partner, proudly touted its "AI Everywhere" initiative. The tech giant, in collaboration with other partners like Samsung, promised to transform every aspect of the Olympic experience. But did it deliver?

Fan Engagement: A New Frontier

One of the most visible applications was the AI-powered fan experience at the Stade de France. Using computer vision and AI analytics, spectators could become "Olympic Hopefuls," with the system matching their athletic profiles to Olympic sports. It's an engaging concept, no doubt, but does it truly enhance the Olympic spirit, or is it just a high-tech party trick?

The Visa Fan Engagement Platform offered AI-generated Olympic art for badges. While novel, we must ask: Does this deepen our connection to the Games, or is it just another form of digital souvenir?

Broadcasting: 8K and Beyond

Perhaps the most significant impact was in broadcasting. Olympic Broadcasting Services (OBS) delivered the first-ever end-to-end 8K live stream, promising unprecedented visual fidelity. The OBS Automatic Highlights Generation, trained on Intel Geti technology, created instant highlights across 14 sports.

This is undeniably impressive. The ability to deliver high-quality content faster and more efficiently could democratize access to Olympic coverage. However, as we marvel at the pixels, are we losing sight of the human stories that make the Olympics compelling?

The Athlete Experience

Intel and Samsung provided athletes with AI-powered devices to enhance training and share their journeys. This direct line between athletes and fans is intriguing, but it raises questions about privacy and the commodification of personal narratives.

The Athlete365 chatbot, while useful for answering FAQs, prompts us to consider: Are we replacing human support systems with algorithms? What are the implications for athlete well-being?

Athlete 365 offers athletes quick and easy access to essential operational information through smartphones and personal computers with AI capabilities. The chatbot can process hundreds of critical data pages in a split second and present it in a user-friendly interface. The information is based on documents provided by the IOC and its ecosystem, ensuring reliability and accuracy.

Justin Hotard , Senior Vice President and General Manager of Data and  AI at Intel, stated that Athlete 365 “showcases how Intel’s open approach to  AI can revolutionize the  Olympic athletes’ experience. We are proud to provide technology that enables athletes to focus on what truly matters – their performance on the  Olympic stage.”

The chatbot is operated by Intel Gaudi 2 AI accelerators on Intel’s Tiber cloud infrastructure, ensuring fast and efficient performance. Additionally, Intel has developed a customized Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) system, guaranteeing high accuracy in responses provided to athletes.

The benefits of Athlete 365 are manifold. The chatbot can deliver precise information to athletes when needed, assist in navigating Olympic facilities, and provide details on schedules, competition rules, and more. It enhances the operational efficiency of the games by supplying quick and accurate information on demand.

AI for Accessibility and Heritage

One of the most promising applications was the use of AI in creating accessible experiences. The wayfinding system for visually and hearing-impaired visitors is a step towards a more inclusive Olympics. Similarly, the neural object cloning technology that transformed Olympic artifacts into 3D digital models is an innovative way to preserve and share Olympic heritage.

These applications demonstrate AI's potential to make the Olympics more accessible and engaging for a global audience. However, we must ensure that digital experiences complement, rather than replace, physical ones.

The Dark Side of Data

As we celebrate these innovations, we must also confront the ethical implications. The use of AI in security measures, while potentially enhancing safety, raises concerns about privacy and surveillance. How do we balance security with individual rights?
