AI is Making Robots Smarter: Establishing Boundaries for Safe Integration

Artificial intelligence (AI) is sweeping across the economy, transforming industries and creating new opportunities. Its influence is unmistakable, from Nvidia’s meteoric rise in the stock market to the ubiquitous marketing campaigns of AI-driven products. Narrow AI has become a tangible tool, and businesses are eagerly exploring its potential.

The Growing Influence of AI in the Workplace

Generative AI, virtual assistants, and self-driving vehicles are some of the early applications of this technology. These innovations are revolutionizing workplaces by automating tedious tasks, such as data entry and financial data extraction. This revolution predominantly occurs in office environments, leveraging company computers.

However, the true potential of AI lies in its application within the physical world, particularly in manufacturing and logistics. Here, robots are already in use, and AI promises to make them smarter and more agile. The military’s push for innovation often leads the way, but as these robots transition from factory floors to service roles, special rules will be necessary to ensure they remain under human control.

The Evolution of AI-Enhanced Robots

Currently, AI applications in mobile robots are designed for simple tasks, but their capabilities are rapidly evolving. For instance, Teradyne Inc.'s mobile pallet jack uses five cameras for “sight” and a Nvidia chip for “thinking,” enabling it to handle pallets that are crooked or damaged.

The industry is moving towards general-purpose robots capable of understanding and executing verbal commands. While industrial robots for repetitive tasks will remain essential, the flexibility and utility of general-purpose robots will make them highly sought after, especially if their costs become competitive with human labor. Companies like Formic Technologies Inc. are already leasing industrial robots that stack boxes for about $15 an hour, including maintenance.

The Human Form Factor

The most advanced general-purpose robots are being designed to resemble humans, as this form factor fits well into our world. Companies like Boston Dynamics and Agility Robotics are leading the way in developing humanoid robots. Hyundai Motor Co.’s acquisition of Boston Dynamics in 2021 highlights the significant investment in this area.

Despite concerns about robots taking over jobs, human dexterity ensures that people will remain valuable in the workforce for the foreseeable future. Early humanoid robots still face challenges such as safety issues, limited battery life, and slow performance. Nonetheless, the conversation about managing these intelligent machines is crucial.

The Military Implications and Ethical Considerations

The military’s interest in AI and robotics raises important ethical questions. Can ground robots be banned from lethal actions while still being used for support tasks like carrying supplies or evacuating soldiers? Fully autonomous drones are already being used in conflicts, making the debate urgent.

The failure of efforts to ban killer robots, as noted by Peter Singer, a senior fellow at New America, underscores the challenge of balancing utility and ethics.

Ensuring Safe Integration of AI and Robotics

To maintain leadership in robotics, the US must ensure a domestic supply chain for these technologies. Historically, after inventing the industrial robot, the US lost dominance to Japan, which now produces about 46% of industrial robots. As China’s production capabilities grow, it is imperative for the US to keep pace.

In civilian applications, a human must always be accountable for a robot’s actions. This is relatively straightforward in controlled environments like factories or warehouses but becomes complex when robots interact with the public. Establishing clear protocols, including possibly a kill switch, is essential to manage these interactions safely.

Preparing for the Future

The tragic incident at Bell Inc., where a worker was killed by a robot, highlights the potential dangers. It is vital to establish safety protocols now to ensure AI and robots can work alongside humans without posing risks. This groundwork is crucial as robots become more sophisticated and integrated into daily life.

The integration of AI and robotics holds immense potential to benefit humanity by taking on dull, dirty, and dangerous jobs. However, the risks associated with these technologies must be managed carefully. Establishing rules and ensuring that humans always have the final say will be key to a safe and prosperous future with AI-enhanced robots.
