AI: The Next Great Transformational Force in Human History
Throughout history, a few groundbreaking discoveries have fundamentally reshaped how we live, work, and connect as humans. Fire, electricity, and the internet are the pillars of progress that have transformed societies at their core. Today, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is emerging as the next great transformational force—not just a tool, but a foundational technology that holds the potential to redefine our world.
Common Traits of Transformational Technologies
When we examine fire, electricity, the internet, and AI, certain common threads become clear. These technologies share characteristics that make them revolutionary:
1. Ethical Considerations: Balancing Creation and Destruction
2. Catalyst for New Economies: Enabling New Frontiers
3. Irreversible Adoption: Transforming the Fabric of Life

Why AI is More Than a Tool
AI is often compared to software tools like Microsoft Excel or enterprise systems such as Oracle, but this underestimates its scope. Tools solve specific problems within existing systems. Transformational technologies, however, reshape the systems themselves.
AI changes decision-making by providing insights beyond human capacity. It raises profound questions about privacy, autonomy, and even what it means to be human. For example:
Looking Ahead: AI’s Transformational Impact
AI is not just another innovation—it is a revolution in progress. Like fire, electricity, and the internet, AI’s ethical, economic, and societal implications show that it is here to transform the fabric of human existence. The question we must ask ourselves is no longer if AI will transform our world, but how we will navigate and shape its incredible potential.
Take, for example, the rise of generative AI in art. What does it mean for artists, industries, and the value we place on human creativity? How do we ensure AI systems are inclusive and equitable, avoiding biases that reflect and amplify existing societal inequalities?
These questions remind us that, as with every transformational technology, how we adapt and respond is what defines the trajectory of progress. As we stand at this crossroads, let us embrace the possibilities while safeguarding the principles that make us human. AI is our next great fire—one that will illuminate our path forward if harnessed with care and vision.

1moI agree but I’m concerned that AI does not yet appear on the political agenda. We appear to be making the same mistake that we did with computerisation in 1960s/1970s when we were not ready to exploit the potential benefits and mitigate the potential problems. I was in banking in the 1970s and recall an encounter with a branch manager who felt all his job had been computerised. He tearfully asked me ‘what do I do now?’ He, and indeed the bank, didn’t work that out for a decade leaving a trail of confusion and stress in the workforce.
