Intro
The Mainframerz meetup events & newsletters are designed to share the latest news and training to 'help you grow your skills and network'.
At our events and through the newsletter you can network with like minded friendly folks keen to help and engage in discussion around the mainframe.
To get the most from our community we invite you to jump in with questions, ideas, or helping with one of our events.
Mainframerz next event?
I know many of you like to learn more about what we have planned for our next event and based on your feedback a lot of active discussions are taking place in our mainframe community around the theme of AI, you could say we have 'AI in our memory' (sorry this pun was so bad that it's officially a dad joke).
I can say before we finalise our line-up that our event we will help unravel the mysteries of AI and share some selected use cases for you.
Slack jobs looking for a role or advertising a role?
Have you seen our jobs channel
One question I am often asked through posting the Mainframerz newsletter is if I am aware of any job opportunities, and I would like to remind you that we do have a job board on slack.
If you would like to share jobs or ask for job related help our Job channel with links at the bottom of the newsletter may be able to help.
Currently I can see jobs posted for a Mainframe Senior Engineering Manager & CICS/MQ System Programmer advertiser and I know that one other person has messaged me about advertising a job posting which may be added as well.
It's a free resource to help you all!
AI Ops and Disaster Recovery on Mainframes
Mainframe Society Discussion
It appears that it is not just the Mainframerz who have AI on the brain; a great discussion question has been posed by the Mainframe Society .
A quick shout out to DiDo :)
How do you see AI Ops enhancing disaster recovery efforts in mainframe environments?
AI Ops is already transforming various aspects of IT, but when it comes to disaster recovery, the stakes are higher. Can AI-driven automation and predictive analytics make recovery faster, more efficient, and less error-prone?
Any thoughts - I know the Mainframe Society would love to hear from you, if you would like to join in the discussion please don't comment in the comments section of the Mainframerz newsletter instead hop over to the post by the Mainframe Society to comment so that we capture all the comments in one place.

Kyndryl survey reveals 86% of enterprises are moving fast to adopt AI
Aim to accelerate mainframe modernization
I always like to share any reports around the health of the mainframe and this week Kyndryl shared their second annual State of Mainframe Modernization Survey and declared 2024 the Year of Artificial Intelligence.
You can read the full report posted by Kyndryl here:
An All-Too-Human History of Artificial Intelligence (AI)
If you would like to read up and do a little background reading around AI, then Reg Harbeck who is a great guy and really worth grabbing for a chat at Share if he is there, has done a great post around AI to the Share Community, in August of this year.
You can read his post here:
“AI refers to the ability of computer systems to attempt to mimic the problem-solving and decision-making capabilities of the human mind.”
This definition has evolved slightly since 1950, when Alan Turing proposed the Turing test for artificial intelligence, originally called the imitation game. He described AI as a machine's ability to exhibit intelligent behaviour equivalent to, or indistinguishable from, that of a human.
Did you know: During WW2 the famous code breakers Alan Turing, Harry Hinsley & John Tiltman all shared a cottage in the village of Simpson just outside of Milton Keynes until 1946.
Now you can visit the cottage and enjoy a walk round Willen Lake or walk along the canal, it's recognised as one of the best walks in the Beds, Herts & Bucks area.
AI Training
Free IBM training certification on AI in 10 hours
A quick shout out to thank Gagan Kakkar who has shared a very helpful post about training in AI and a certification that is available for free from IBM which you can find out more about here:
All things COBOL
COBOL Compendium
Well quite a lot, in September 2024 it will be 65 years since the CODASYL committee scribbled the acronym COBOL on a piece of paper to propose the name of the language they were developing for business use.
A big shout to my good friend Derek Britton who has compiled on behalf of COBOL turning 65 a useful list of resources:-

Why COBOL is here to stay
It seems only fitting with the anniversary of COBOL and an upcoming event featuring AI it makes sense to share a video about COBOL & AI.
If you would like a slightly deeper dive into some of the nuances of using AI and some of the problems you may find, the post by Marian Stiehler about using AI with medical data for analysis to be of interest.

Grow your skills: Podcasts
IBM AI in Action
IBM have recently launched a new podcast series entitled AI in Action thank you to Tuck Satterfield who has provided the links below:-
📺 – https://ibm.co/3XqR35s (YouTube)
🎧 – https://ibm.co/4d7WMD4 (Spotify)
🍎 – https://ibm.co/3ZnBQol (Apple)
I've chosen a post around US Fantasy Football to showcase the podcasts with an interview between IBM & ESPN.
I feel IBM have missed a trick in not taking the use of AI to combat Chess Master {Magnus Carlsen} a winner of fantasy football (based on the English Premier League). We could see the next IBM vs Chess Grand Master 2 this time competing on English Premier League Fantasy football, I am sure it would attract an audience.
Finally thank you all
I really appreciate the kind words
Can I say still really appreciate everybody who takes the time and reaches out and and offers kind words about the newsletter, I appreciate every comment.
I don't like to name people when a message is sent in private to me hopefully I have kept the sender hidden, I will say that this was a nice pick me up after coming back off my holiday.
"Do you have an idea or topic you would like to present at one of our Mainframerz events, do you have a topic you would likes us to discuss at the Mainframerz event.....
....or would you like to suggest an article, topic or discussion for the newsletter...
...if so I want to hear from you as well as my regular contributors!"
✨ 💬 Potpourri {mainframe & non-mainframe stories} ✨
Building Bridges
As many of us working in the mainframe will have at one point or another worked for a bank I thought a story that is loosely tied to banking might be fun. I have tapped in to a story by Charles Carter who has shared a story about the Euro bank notes.
Those crazy dutch have done it again (in around 2010) in Spijkenisse, Netherlands {Rotterdam} those crazy dutch decided to build a series of bridges based on the Euro bank notes and recreate them.
TESCO - Till Outages
I'm often tipped off about outages and hacks and then have to decide if to mention them or not. I thought I would mention the recent TESCO outage which happened on Sunday 15th September an outage of the Tesco checkout software, I believe Sunday is now the busiest trading day.
It looks like the tills in Tesco were compromised to prevent them from working, as yet I have not seen any mention of this is the media or from the supplier of the software to Tesco.
I know that this was reported on DownDetector at the time of the event.
As you can see at the time the event took place there was a big spike in reported outages as you would expect.
As always please stay vigilant with your security and employ best practices to minimise the potential issues, such as adopting Zero Trust, and other techniques.
Apple, Google lose EU cases
For many years there have been grumblings about the tax status of Ireland for foreign IT firms and the rate of tax paid.
I find it interesting that now the same country Ireland is now part of a significant landmark ruling and Ireland will benefit in a payment of unpaid tax from Apple to the tune of £11bn roughly $14bn in US dollars.
The European Commission has won major victories in two landmark rulings against Apple and Google on Tuesday.
In a case dating back to 2016, the Court of Justice of the European Union ruled that Apple must pay Ireland €13bn (£11bn) worth of unpaid taxes.
Meanwhile, the EU's top court rejected Google's appeal of a €2.4bn (£2bn) fine in a case that accused it of "abusing its monopoly power" to best rivals in shopping. The decisions were seen as major tests of the EU's bid to rein in large tech firms on tax and antitrust matters.

Generative AI is reportedly tripling carbon dioxide emissions from data centers
I thought a nice counterpoint to consider is to look at how AI will impact datacenters in terms of security and also of power consumption.
A report from Morgan Stanley suggests the datacenter industry is on track to emit 2.5 billion tons by 2030, which is three times higher than the predictions if generative AI had not come into play.
The extra demand from GenAI will reportedly lead to a rise in emissions from 200 million tons this year to 600 million tons by 2030, thanks largely to the construction of more data centers to keep up with the demand for cloud services.

UK Data centres to be given massive boost and protections from cyber criminals and IT blackouts
The UK has this week that Data Centres are to be granted a new status of "Critical National Infrastructure". The Technology Secretary Peter Kyle made the announcement’. It is the first Critical National Infrastructure (CNI) designation in almost a decade, since the Space and Defence sectors gained the same status in 2015.

Just for fun: R you sure AI ?
I recently stumbled upon Strawberries in AI and a couple of stories came out of this.
As a reward for making it to the final story in the newsletter I can share a story from our opening speaker Kevin Engelke
We all know this happens with AI too, often called “hallucinating.”That's why AI scientists are focused on developing reasoning.
It works in a super simple way—almost like how we humans think:
1️⃣ Understand the text: Analyze the meaning of the text and break it down into smaller parts.
2️⃣ Apply knowledge: Use learned data to find solutions or make sense of the text.
3️⃣ Reasoning🌟: Continuously ensure the coherence and logical integrity of the text being generated.
4️⃣ Deliver the answer: Provide the final answer after refining it.
ChatGPT (OpenAI) has been working on project #Strawberry 🍓 for quite some time. The result? The new “o1”-model series.
You can read the post from Kevin about ChatGPT project Strawberry here:
Staying with Strawberries the video may explain why ChatGPT chose the name Strawberry.
I have not tested this out, so I have added this clip for fun which has not been tested by me to see if it is true:-
